Played around with more shots from paris and found that these two might fit into that black and white series. They were all shot handheld and during 3 hours:

These are excellent as well david. The dramatic sky really makes them and think b&w is a good choice too

Thank you!

Its funny how about all of those black and white series were unnoticed by me until i looked at them for like the 5th time. The decision to make them square helped getting much more interesting compositions and led to different choices of what pictures look good.

There is something about 3:2 ratio that does not fit me. I tried to crop some images to medium format cameras ratios and also 16:9 and 1:2.54 with black bars on top and below like a cinema movie and it makes them so much more interesting i find. Maybe its because 3:2 is so common and i got tired of it? However, this is the first time i think that i made my images square and i quite like it.

Btw: @David Arbogast if i remember correctly you also do architecture stuff right? If you ever get to paris dont miss out on La Defense. Its an architecture photographers dream! I spent 3h there and there are so many possibilities and everything is very good accessible. Might also work as a portrait location

I think square format works well for architecture in general. I've got a project in mind myself for this year which will involve architecture, square format and b&w and is the reason I bought the 16 stop nd filter recently. Just need a break in the weather to be able to start it!

Gothic. Dramatic superlative.
I just can't seem to get near a big city.....phobia maybe!
But man I'm loving living vicariously through your lens.

The tonal qualities of this series are outstanding. I would hang any one of them on my wall. Really great. How did you do the conversion. I love them all.

Thanks everyone, im very happy with this series. I really feel like the A7R2 is the camera that i will be using for a long time, and thats not something ive said of any camera before...

I have converted them to B&W in lightroom. I find the color controls to be very useful to separate the tones or add more contrast. Btw, i usually am very cautious with the clarity and contrast sliders in LR, but most of these shots have +80 contrast and almost +100 clarity and some dodge and burn with the brush in LR. For 2 of them if i remember correctly i even added a gradient to the top which affects the whole image to bump the clarity slider even more. They look ridiculous converted back to color lol. But i think with black and white and the style given on this images i find it quite interesting to look at. Oh, and another note: i have exported them all from lightroom. No photoshop work done for now as ive given myself the restriction to make a picture the way i want it to be in lightroom, and then only for minor stuff or retouching skin in photoshop.

Very nice work with this series David, and good decision with the black and white. Ansel Adams shot most of his work in B&W because he thought color would be tonally distracting. I'm not typically a fan of B&W, but I can see why he felt that way in your shots. The tones in these shots are downright awesome.

How funny, just seconds ago I purchased DXO Optics 10.
I don't know about adding ViewPoint 2, I just don't do much architecture.
Does it apply to other genres?

I agree it's probably not a great fit for you.

It does have a nice distortion correction to make people/things look less stretched at the edges of the frame with UWA lenses, so it does apply to more than arch. Could be good for wedding shooters as well (wide angle group portraits).

Just came back from a trip to Japan with my A7R2 and a Canon-mount Sigma 35mm f1.4 on a Kipon adapter. I just loved the way the colours came out of the camera compared to the 5D3 (still keeping this guy for low-light concerts). This is great when you're walking in a colourful place like Akihabara.

Here's the album from the trip: https://www.flickr.com …/albums/72157662661443671 (external link)

If anyone's interested, a gallery of shots with various lenses, both Canon and Sony: https://www.flickr.com …/albums/72157660563602133 (external link)

I also got a Ninja 2 to go along with it. Yes, I know it's full HD but the second unit I got is a fifth what a new Assassin Blade would cost.

Very cool series Maurice. Great photos. I studied Japanese for 3 years and its always been a goal of mine to visit one day. Would have brought the Japanese darth vader and the R34 Skyline GT-R home with me :-)

Thanks. I use LR for my BW conversions too and my workflow is similar, PS only on rare occasions. . Great job.

would love medium and small raw. Is it possible to apply on import to a dng? That would solve it mostly, however, it wouldnt hurt to have a smaller raw in favor of larger buffer and quicker to review images.

I assume you mean a medium/small raw file at the same resolution? I wonder how the quality would hold up using less megapixels on such a high res image. There is the option of getting a small raw file now when shooting in APS-C mode but of course, this will give a 1.5 cropped FOV. The raw file size is about 18mb.
