Battery wise I only have the two that came with the camera. I've never made it through both in a single day so haven't bothered buying more.

I think switching the camera fully off when not I'm use is key. I used to leave my canons switched on all the time

I don't have any more problems with blue sky with the Sony than I do/did with the Canon 5D3. Here's a shot taken at 11:32 am on 12/17 for an example. No adjustments made, just opened the raw file, changed image size and posted.

The sky looks natural to me at any rate.

Anyone have experience shooting infrared? Has anyone modified an older camera? I've been seriously considering it after seeing a few YouTube tutorials on the subject. Would you consider infrared photography a fad? I may get my a7R modified but not sure. Sounds like you can start with a screw on filter to see if you like this type of photography.

Yeah meant to say the same. It renders the sky so realistically its almost boring haha. One thing i disliked on the 6D...

Fad? No.
Yes to a modded camera.
IR has its place and a little dose goes a long way.
I wouldn't mod an A7R though, IR is just not that often craved.
I'd start with a cheaper camera. I've got 2 G1Xs, might do one of them
someday.
Screw in filter. Yep they work but are a pain.
Here is one from a modded cheapo camera Panasonic SZ7-

^GS I went the screw in filter route at first. It works but serious patience required, focusing before putting on the filter, then trying not to move anything while you screw
the filter on=pain. And huge amounts of Sun light which just ain't happening in my area...thus the experiment with the pre-modded SZ7. It satisfied my IR urge. I'm
good with the results and I didn't trash a serious camera to do it.

Your best friend besides extra batteries is the on-off switch. I hope its rated same as the shutter
because in a day of shooting I must turn it on/off 500 hundred times (ok an exaggeration but maybe
not). Using the on-off I can get huge numbers of pics, well beyond 400 on 2 batteries gripped.

no kidding...I hve to get used to that, although I have mine setup to time out in a short time. I only shot 15-20 frames the other day, 4 LE's and the battery went down nearly 20%. A spare is on its way!

Another thing I've noticed, and yet another possible friend, is that battery life of mirrorless is even more affected by cold temps. I know many on this forum
live in balmy areas (Gene, David) but up here in the mountains doing (trying) to do astro I've learned to embrace those chemical heat packs (you know the kind that
you can put in your boot, some shaped like your foot with stick to hold it on the sock). I even wrap my lens esp. near the hood area with them, then use a slap cozy to
hold them in place to prevent condensation.
So for battery life when its seriously cold I stick one on the bottom of the battery grip.
I'll even keep a smaller heat packet in a pocket where the extra batteries go :)
