David and Travis, I saw the same and comparison the other day. Never heard of Breakthrough. Yeah I didn't agree with their color tests either.

Need to checkout the Haida brand more.

I have heard of them, there was a thread here on POTN where someone that worked for them, or was a part of that company was making wildly inaccurate claims about sharpness with ND filters...I carried on a conversation with others in that thread and then debunked the claim...and then the thread kinda died...they look great, they look like they perform well, and for a screw on filter, probably are the best option out there. The color cast on that video was clearly to me, more closely reproduced by the B+W, which was a complete surprise to me. My experience with the B+W 10 stop was a very magenta cast that I had trouble removing to allow me to continue to work in color, while I love Black and white, I don't want everything in black and white....

At the end of the day, the best filter set is the one that works best for you...I know that for me, Screw on just doesn't work for me. I don't mind the cumbersome nature of square filters, but I know a lot of folks don't want to deal with that.

The biggest downside to the lens that I am seeing - a major disappointment with an f/1.4 lens - is it renders bad bokeh. Classic "nisen bokeh" (external link), which means OOF lines (tree branches) render as fuzzy double lines. Pretty horrid imo. Very disappointing, but not necessarily a deal-killer for me though - other attributes are so good I may just decide to live with a crappy f/1.4 bokeh lens. ;)

Very interesting about the nisen bokeh on the 35Lii, but I guess that's to be expected after they put so much emphasis on CA correction. I'm finding myself on the fence about the Batis 85 in that one regard (and only that regard). It's sharpness and pop blow me away, CA is very well controlled. Focusing speed is totally acceptable, love the light weight and size of it. But the bokeh isn't quite as... idunno... graceful as I'd like. And unlike you, as a portrait shooter, bokeh is a big part of my bread-and-butter.

The nisen effect is especially noticeable with high contrast foreground bokeh. It's rare, but I had a few shots from a headshot session where there was a dark concrete pillar in shadow to the left of the subject. It was in the foreground, and behind it was a bright window in the distance, so it was abrupt black-to-white edge. There was basically a phantom floating second edge on the pillar that was so distracting I deleted the whole set of shots. (now that I'm talking about it, I wish I hadn't deleted them, but I was in crank-it-out-mode)

I've got the 85 GM on preorder, and am looking forward to testing it out side-by-side against the Batis as well as my Canon 85Lii. A little voice in my head is telling me I'm probably going to miss the Zeiss pop, but the bokeh might come closer to the magical graceful quality I've come to expect from the 85L. I guess we'll see

Haida is a lot cheaper than breakthrough and B+W so i might go with haida.

I have no idea how to know if it's a 6 stop or 10 stop. some listings like the link below only say ND3.0 1000x filter, how many stop is that?

i am set to buy a Haida 10 stop filter and an app on my iphone called "+10 Stops" which will give me a conversion or shuttespeed with and without the filter. Kinda shoot a base/correct exposure without the filter, then enter the shutterspeed on the app and it will give you an equivalent shutterspeed with the 10-stop filter on. really cool. no more guessing.

yep, apps really help with the math. do some testing, most ND filters are actually darker than the listed factor...my Lee is closer to 11 than it is to 10.

Why would you need this with live view?

heard that too on some youtube guys. with the app, you can change the stops(it's called filter strength). you can set it to 12 stops or whatever. for that i might go with the haida 12 stops.

beyond 30seconds (bulb mode), you cannot see it liveview because you cannot dial beyond 30seconds, right? correct me if i'm wrong.
