recently every Canon lens Canon updated price almost doubled. Better off buying Sigma, Tamron or Samyang.

I hope they do update the 135L soon as it will make the used prices on the original even more attractive than they already are :)

you're either stuck with the LA-EA4 that has a piece of glass in the way, or the LA-EA3, which omits AF (screw drive). MF pretty much any AF lens will be clunky compared to a true MF lens.

If the lens were SSM, which is compatible with the LA-EA3, I'de be shooting it already.

that something I was thinking, Sony needs a new adapter that has a motor, but skips the mirror, this way you could use all the screw driven lenses but wouldn't have to use inferior build in AF.

I'm thinking it might happen soon, with the recent sale on all the sony adapters. Hopefully, sony goes for a mirrorless big body camera that can support A mount, E mount, and screw drive lenses. With that, comes an adapter that can do eye focus in continuous with A mount glass, and ability to use screw drive lenses.

This is a beautiful portrait - colours and bokeh rendering are off the charts good.

The horizon angle of the background however does slightly bother me. For interest, I re-cropped it as a 4x5 and also a 1x1 and it also works very well because the image is razor sharp - even using a square cropping and then a 1:1 LR zoom, the image is outrageously sharp - bravo.

I have the 135L but I think this lens is better - wow.

Thanks man. Agree on the tilted horizon. I remember trying to straighten it when I was processing it last fall, but the rock they're sitting on is tilted and fixing the horizon frames them awkwardly in the shot.

But yes its a very nice lens. Very sharp wide open, great colors, great bokeh, and the hard transition between the subject and background gives the images a lot of pop. I don't often shoot it wide open b/c its hard to have enough DOF, but the look is unreal when it can be pulled off.

That's one of the reasons why I never really liked wider angle lenses. Apart from it being hard to not get a too busy picture (too much things in focus), I find that the wider angle lenses are never as sharp as the telephoto lenses. But yeah I'm a pixelpeeper, so I guess I would notice the difference between the 135L and the SY 135mm F/2.

The thing about the telephoto primes is that there is an impression of sharpness that comes from the subject isolation you get with a lot of FOV compression. It's a nice look, but if you have a nice environment to work with, you miss out on what could be a nice photo by nuking the background. When shooting environmental portraits my goal is to pull enough of the background into the frame to tell the right story....sometimes there are too many distracting elements in the background, so a telephoto is necessary, but many times I want to pull more of the background into the frame so a wider lens is necessary...hence the bigass kit of primes I drag around.

No good bad better or worse....depends on the situation.

Gene, I'm really curious about the cart immediately to the right of the refrigerator.
The refrigerator door is blocking part of the cart. Does it have 4 wheels? I could
use a cart like that if it has 4.
Of course noticed it looking for the hidden sig :)

Sorry, it only has two wheels. This is a "garden and BBQ" cart from Suncast and is no longer in production. I learned that when I cleaned it up to use as a utility cart for my grilling. I wanted to add more shelves since it only came with one and discovered the cart is no longer made. To make a long story short, I found a user manual for it and got the part number for the shelf. They didn't have any based on that part number but when I spoke to a 2nd person, they said the last two numbers are the color and checked to see if their were any other colors availabe. Lo and behold, they had 70 shelves in black (instead of dark green). I immediately ordered two of them and paid the $17.89 happily.

I got the two new shelves yesterday and they made the cupboard space much more efficient now.

The 135L was a great lens years ago, but it really needs an (optical) update because it has been surpassed by multiple other 135mm lenses. The Samyang 135mm F/2 for example simply crushes it at about half the price, but lacks autofocus though (see here (external link) for proof).

I've never understood the notion of just because there's something %10 better on the market a product needs an absolute overhaul or it's useless... I'd much rather they just reduce the price %10 and call it even :)

I was really down the last few weeks, a lot of trouble in my mind, missed opportunities to shoot and to enjoy life and was depressed sitting at home with fever last week. Now im feeling better and started reediting two shots i made back in november. I should really invest more in PP because i totally missed those two. I still hope I can go out to shoot something again anytime soon..

Second one is a 10 minute exposure!

Nice shots David. I think the second one could use some light on the cylinders to separate it from the background. First one has nice composition.
