In regards to testing a lens can anyone advise the best way of doing it? My thoughts were to take a series of images at various apertures from a tripod focused at something far in the distance/infinity with the lens angled so that the horizon passes through two corners. Then focus manually at something in the centre and compare sharpness at each aperture in the corners and centre frame.
Any better way of doing this to check how a lens performs? David A how did you test your lenses recently?
My test was to compare all my lenses on 5DS R and a7R II - it was a comparitive test to learn if I lost any sharpness from my Canon lenses on the a7R II. At that time I had not repurchased the TS-E 24L II yet, so I need to redo the test for that lens. I think I'll go out and do that today.
For my test, since I was only using standard (non tilt/shift) lenses, I just positioned the tripod in a spot where I could get good detail in all four corners and took shots at all main apertures (1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16). Since it was a comparative test I used the compare tool in LR to see them both side-by-side zoomed in. I didn't try using different focus points, though...that might be good to do.
