I bet the FE 16-35 will pale in that contest.

Anyone want to post more opinions of the FE 55mm? I've mostly heard neutral to bordering negative reviews in terms of enjoyment from the lens, but I keep coming back to looking at it.

I just ordered a Fuji 18mm f2 and realised that 3 of my 4 AF lenses cover the 28mm equivalent focal length... I need a 50mm to mix it up :)

I love it. It's not my most frequently used focal length - in paid shoots I'm usually hovering between 85-135mm, but the 55 is my casual walkaround lens. IQ is fantastic IMHO. I don't have a 28mm like you, so the 55 is currently my only "little" lens

When I first bought the A7R2 (coming from a 5D3), I bought the 55 along with it. Shot with it for about a week, then exchanged it for a 90 Macro because I wanted to test out Eye-AF in a headshot scenario (and 55mm isn't really great for headshots). After a few weeks I missed the 55 so much I bought it again.

Got one. I think I used it once maybe twice. We're going to Iceland in May and it's going.
We plan on a photo flight in one area and I think it should do good then plus we'll walk
around town on the last day and I'll use it for general touristy shots.

I really like it optically, it's the lens I missed most when I sold my a7r before coming back to Sony again. It's crazy sharp and renders nice IMO. It's also nice and small. On the negative side for me is the aperture. I miss my 50L and the 1.8 on this doesn't give that look I like, that's why I'm going to add the sigmalux too in the hope that it gives me that. I'll still keep the fe55 though.

It's an absolutely brilliant lens. If you're good with the focal length, then I think it's basically a "must have" for any A7 body.

it's my main walk around lens on my A7rii. The added 5mm was a bit tough for me to adjust, it may be trivial for some.

a few pros and cons

IQ is ridiculous wide open improves slightly stopped down, bokeh is fine, lightweight, nice hood, 0 T stop loss in light levels, AF fast and all modes work.

Focal length arguably, f1.8 only, focus by wire....

aside from price, it's near perfect balance of size and performance. Among my most used lens, the other is the voigtlander 40 even with its many flaws. Obviously, I dont love it the way I love the 100/135mm f2, but I do LOVE it when I shoot landscapes with it. The love is reminiscent of my previously owned ze 100 MP for shooting landscapes.

G-Master time lol

I have bad gas but i dont think it goes to that extent. Unless the 70-200g is only 2001.00 bucks then I might but im predicting 3200.00 USD for that lens minimum

@Travis - I took some test photos with the TSE 24 II today at f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16 & f/22.

For reference I focussed exactly in the middle of the frame. One thing I thought of after though was that the buildings I focussed on in the centre are at a different distance from the camera than the stuff at the corners so DOF might come in to play a bit. I also forgot to turn off IBIS if that matters. Lens was not shifted or tilted. Compressed RAW.

@David A - i know you already have the lens but would be interested to hear your thoughts on what you see also.

I also took shots with the Samyang 24 f/1.4 from the same setup. What I can see straight away is that the Samyang is sharper in the corners than the unshifted TSE 24 II!!

If you align the TSE shots with the Samyang shots in PS as layers and flick between at matching apertures you will see the Samyang is sharper at every aperture

Here are the TSE 24 II shots HERE (external link)
Here are the Samyang shots HERE (external link)

So what does this tell me? Is the TSE 24 II no good on the A7RII? Does it just look bad because the Samyang is exceptional?

I really wish I had taken shots at 24mm with my 16-35 also to see how the 3 lenses compare. I may have to repeat this test now. The downside is that if the TSE is indeed inferior on the A7RII it poses me a problem as I really need a tilt shift lens for the architecture project I started today

Thats what my experience said. The TSE24II wasnt that sharp to me. The FD35TS beats it in handling, and optically. It isnt that contrasty, but it is very sharp.

I had my first attempt at a Joel Tjintjelaar style architecture shot today. My light leak issue is almost cured with the neoprene pouch I adapted. Theres still a bit of an issue with light bouncing between my two filters so next time im going to add a bit of black tape to the equation. I have quickly learned that I have a LOT to learn on the PP side. Really struggled with this and its not yet where I want it to be. Also going to re-shoot it as I wanted to stick to square crop and shot this a bit too close for that.

For now though heres my first attempt. Ill call it a work in progress

Geez colors look great out of that lens.

I wouldn't part with the 135 though! An 85 can't replaced the compressed FOV of a 135!

This.

I much prefer Vincent's pictures taken with the SY135 over the Sony FE 85mm F/1.4 GM samples I've seen so far.

Very nice lens by in all technical aspects. Sharp wide open, nice contrasty rendering and very clean bokeh. I'm not a 55 guy (prefer 35 or 85) so I ultimately sold it, but not because of any technical fault of the lens. Very compact too....only slightly larger than the FE28.

Yeah. 85 and 135 are just very different FOV. 85 is still somewhat of an environmental portrait lens, and if you want to really blur the background a 135 is the lens to go for. My personal portrait kit is a 35 85 135 holy trinity and there's a time and place for all three lenses.
