Umbrella in the rain style lighting.

I image you tape the flash to the handle, pointing up toward the umbrella? Or down toward the subjects?

I think I also see light coming from behind the subjects, but my question is more about positioning the flash inside the umbrella.

In that shot there doesnt appear to be a flash in the umbrella at all.

I hadn't considered that... but ya, there's no direct light on either the faces or the umbrella.

There are lots of approaches. The shots with the flash in the umbrella are more front lit on the faces. Both are valid ways to go.

As above, there are variations, lighting the brolly and couple as you've suggested from with the couple. Lighting it with a single light as in the example, the flash appears to be at chest height, or as there and adding a light at the front too, to light the couple better.

As said above, flash does not have to be IN the umbrella. In fact you want it to be backed up a bit so it can backlight the rain or in the case of my shot below, the snow.

Another variation on this is to place your backlight farther behind the couple (in this case I covered it with a white plastic bag to protect it) and place your couple in a doorway. I also bounced a light off the ceiling to add some front light.

There is. As l said the flash is not IN the umbrella (e.g. clipped to the shaft) though. It's further back, maybe 4, 5 feet and pointed toward the umbrella.
