Announced yesterday.
I'm still looking for the terms of service to see what rights Google takes away for the "free" storage

Google stores "a compressed version " of the photos so not good as your primary backup.

correct. Not good for images over 16mb, RAW or TIFF.

this isn't meant as a professional storage solution, rather Google is going after the data from millions of regular people with cameras taking trillions of photos a year. Google will then mine the data and sell to advertisers.

I used picasaweb as an easy way to share pictures with friends and family. All these pictures were now transferred to Google Photos. First impression is not bad.

But what I thinks is really remarkable (or actually scary): Try the search function! It is amazing good. You can punch in any keyword - e.g. hiking and the app provides you with the hiking pictures; or 'water' and you get pictures with water in it. And it is quite good.
Try 'birthday'! Of course it is not perfect and Photos does not know if the party actually is a birthday party - but the results are nothing short then amazing.

This give you a glimps into the power of picture analysis. It is not just searching for faces but more and more content can be extracted from bitmaps.

Compressed doesn't mean data loss, so some testing should be done before judgement is rendered.

Yep, they've been doing that with our search history, our browsing history, everything we do online. That stuff bugs the crap out of me, little by little our privacy is evaporating into thin air.

review of the service: http://www.macnn.com/articles/15/05/29/you.will.swap.to.this.from.apple.photos..but.think.it.through.first.128822/

looks like if you pay, they won't compress your images.

No, we are handing it over. Willingly in most cases.
