A lot of window blinds closed, thought they had to be fully open for both take-off and landing.

I've never heard an instruction to do that... Maybe for the pilot & co? Lol

Nice Pic!

After a little search... they are not required in the US. Other countries have their own rules. When I was traveling through Europe last year, it was never brought up though.

Always instructed such on BA and easyJet - haven't flown with other carriers for sometime.

I fly Easyjet a lot and have never been told to do this. Any idea what the theory behind it is as it's quite interesting that some countries might do this and others not - would think if there was a good reason it would be the same across the board (and if there is a good reason I'm opening everyones window myself next time I fly :) )

From what I was reading, emergency response crews can view inside quickly to asses the situation... just in case.
Also, passenger's eyes on something unusual occurring on say the wings, could be valuable info.

That makes perfect sense! On most planes I spot at Schiphol, a lot of the blinds are down, so I guess it's not an international rule.

Had a google and there do seem to be a few sensible reasons. In addition to the above I found it suggested it is also to make sure your eyes are adjusted to the light conditions rather than having to adjust in an emergency. Also so you can see out in an emergency and know which way not to exit the plane or so you can assess the situation outside and prepare for it.

Now I am going to go around opening everyones windows next time I fly ;-)a

I don't know if opening WINDOWS is a very good idea:lol: You may need quite a big hammer for that:-)
