Also, passenger's eyes on something unusual occurring on say the wings, could be valuable info. That makes perfect sense! On most planes I spot at Schiphol, a lot of the blinds are down, so I guess it's not an international rule. In addition to the above I found it suggested it is also to make sure your eyes are adjusted to the light conditions rather than having to adjust in an emergency. Also so you can see out in an emergency and know which way not to exit the plane or so you can assess the situation outside and prepare for it. Canon 6D / Canon 70-200 IS ii / Sigma 100 Macro f2.8 / 50mm f1.8
