Well at least this Yellow Bellied Sapsucker doesn't want too! Most of these were taken when it was getting dark.

For two days the Sapsucker has been following this male Hairy Woodpecker everywhere he goes...from post to suet, to apple tree on my lawn, from perch to perch. He never gets really close, but keeps him moving.

Funny we are all having Sapsucker at the feeders, Super nice Sandy,..Mine was unlucky enough to run into a second story window, He was rolling his eyes back in his head for a good 10 mins then seemed to come around. He flew up on a branch and sat for a bit more. I do think he's fine and back to normal

Thanks Ian. When I first saw him there, I thought wow, there's more color there than normal. I'm used to seeing the Hairys and Downys which seem rather blah now!

Thanks Jeff! He is a daily visitor this year, through out the day. That is too bad about yours hitting a window. Some lessons are learned the hard way.

Thanks Peter. He was about 3 feet from my window!

Thank you very much. This is the first year that I have hung the suet next to the hanging flower basket. It is also the most I have seen the Sapsucker...so I shall leave it there!

A beautiful set of this lovely woodpecker. I think we spoil them with the hand outs but I do enjoy feeding them too. I love the shot with the flowers. That is a wonderful set!

Thanks Carol. My life would be so boring without the birds next to my windows, but then again, I'd get a lot more work done! Last night he was coming to the fruit and nut mixture that is on top of a fence post.

what he said! lovely pics, especially the close-ups!

sapsuckers don't actually eat sap... they drill holes in the bark to let the sap run, then return to those holes later (often many times) to catch insects that become trapped there, kinda like using the sap as flypaper... they got the name "sapsucker" because people originally thought they were eating the sap itself. i have photos of red-breasted sapsuckers picking the insects from the sap to take home for their babies...
