I have been researching ND filters off and on for several weeks. I ran across two that interested me. My preference is the circular screw-on ND filter and they sure can be expensive. My search landed me on two unfamiliar brands so I kept digging to see what I could find out about them.

The first one was an English company Formatt-Hitech. The second company was Breakthrough Photography, a Kickstarter start-up. Both products are available through Adorama, B&H, and Amazon.

When I read reviews online I take them with a grain of salt. Many people are sent products to review in hopes of getting a good review. In the case of Formatt-Hitech, I read a lot of good things, but a few reviewers weren’t happy with the color cast. There was not a lot of information on the Breakthrough Photography ND filter since they are just starting out. The online reviews from people sent pre-release ND filters were glowing. Then I came across this (external link) forum post and it has changed my mind 100% against doing business with Breakthrough Photography. I think the communication back and forth between the company owner and this customer is legit and I find it appalling that a company would treat a customer in such a rude manner.

So I will take my chances with a Formatt-Hitech 10-stop ND filter and hope for the best. Since this will be my first ND filter, I won’t have anything to compare it to. I’m wondering if anyone here has had a good/bad experience with this filter: 77mm Firecrest Neutral Density 3.0 (10 Stops).

Shame on you, Grant. I think you have a lot to learn about Customer Service. You’ve lost yet another customer.

I'm not sure how you limited upur choices to those two, but get the Haida 10 stop instead.

The older Formatt-Hitech ND filters did have a colour cast. I tested one for a local camera shop (quite close to where they are made) and it had a distinct orange cast.
However this is a thing of the past! Their current "Pro Stop" filters have VERY little colour cast. Two friends of mine have the Prop Stop 10 stop filters and I have the 6 stop version (all are 100mm square filters) and the colour cast is negligible. One of these friends tried his Formatt 10 stopper directly to the Lee Big Stopper and preferred the Formatt version.
The only Firecrest filter I have is the 82mm CPL, which is very good, but as the Firecrest is their current current top of the range I would expect it to be at least as good as my Pro Stop (in other words VERY GOOD) or more likely better.
Let us know how you get on, it is nice to see our Welsh filters cropping up around the world!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
