as far as ND filter's go Haida makes very well reviewed ones at quite a bit less than the big names. I have one and I really like it (but it is the only one I have ever had so i have nothing to compair it to)

The EF-S 10-22 is not a good Astrophotography lens. Get the EF-S 10-18 STM.

Hey, I was just curious what makes the 10-22 bad at astrophotography? I don't have one, I was just wondering.

F/3.5 is a little slow for Astrophotography and it also has "Coma". I don't know if the 10-18 STM is any better but it is cheaper. That why I recommended it.

Mack over in the Astro forum was making some very impressive images with a 10-22 before going FF. Although if astro was the primary focus the Tokina 11-16/2.8, 11-20/2.8 and Samyang 10/2.8 would be better.

The 10-22 is still the best all around UWA. It has about the best flair control and a good combination of sharpness and aperture, if you stop the 10-22 down to apertures the the 10-18 actually has, they are pretty even.

Heya,

To be fair, Mack had his 10-22 rigged to a 6D. Lots of people modded the 10-22 to full frame for fun. So he had a few more stops of ISO to play with. Also, he is has some of the highest skill at capturing astro and processing those files, so he's an exception.

The 10-22 is not inherently bad at astro. The difference in F2.8 and F3.5 is not that big, even in astro light terms. It's less than 1 stop of ISO difference.

For someone serious into astro, really, the lens is only important in terms of coma control and sharpness for the desired focal length, because they will (or should be if not yet) using a tracker. Even entry trackers are better than getting a super camera and super fast lens.

Very best,

Probably in a little late, but when I was looking for something similar, I went for the Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX 11-16MM F/2.8 and I wasn't disappointed.

Good information as I am looking for something similar.
I am a bit different in that I have an EOS-M with the EF adapter, 22mm M lens, Nifty Fifty, Nifty Two-Fifty as my main lenses. I find myself doing more and more landscape style stuff so I want something that will fill that gap below the 22mm but I am looking at either going with something like the 10-18mm, Tokina 11-16, Tamron 12-24 or maybe even the Rokinon 12mm or 14mm manuals.

Question then becomes, how hard is it to get used to a manual lenses? I have never used one before so would it be a lot harder to get used to something like that?

if all you have is the eos-M, i think the 11-22IS EF-m may be the best choice

While that would be nice, over here (USA) we did not get that lens and to get it the cost is normally over $400+.

Seems like the 10-18 is the way to go but was just curious if the f/2.8 Tokina or f/4 Tamron would be better image quality.

if you watch on ebay, you should be able to pick one up for the low $300...of course there's no warranty though

you can try the digital picture comparisons to see where things stack up

Thanks for the comparison site. All three lenses seems like they would do just fine coupled with my M. If I could I would probably lean towards the Tokina 11-18 DX II which seemed to have the best all around sharpness. But again I am not a pro or even an avoid photographer so I would probably not be able to tell the difference between the three in my photos.

Tokina 11-18 DX II.

Doesn't DX = Nikon?

In the Tokina world, DX means crop camera for both Nikon and Canon.
