Any bokeh shots?? Trying to decide between this one and the other Sigma 10-20 f3.5, keen to see what it can do at f4.

UWA aren't really lenses you go after if you're looking for bokeh...for the most part focusing at anything past a couple feet will put the DOF to infinity...i'm not saying you can't get some shots with bokeh, or out of focus areas...just that it's a lot harder to do

I understand that, of course.

But the Tokina 11-16 @ f2.8 can produce some pretty decent bokeh, while remaining sharp. And I have seen some nice shots from the Canon 10-22 @ f3.5.

While it certainly isn't a dealbreaker for me, I would still like the possibility to produce some nice sharp shots of close subjects separated from a blurry background, and I just wondered if anybody with this lens has taken any?

I don't want to have to spend more $$ on the Tokin or Canon, as they are outside my budget. And the 10-20 constant f3.5 doesn't appear to be as good as the 10-20 f4-5.6.

got any examples of these sorts of shots? You can focus on a subject a couple of inches away and you will get blurred background.... its just not that blurred.

I have seen shots by people with very blurred background but they were clearly photoshoped to get the effect.

In the Canon 10-22 I asked about bokeh, a few pages back, and was provided with some examples.

The best one I saw was taken on the Tokina of a beer on a bar in a pub, with great bokeh. I can't remember I it was at this forum or not, will try to find it.

EDIT - it was the Tok thread, not Canon. https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=502308&page=107

I will continue to look for the others.

Allmost any lens will give you a nice bokey if you focus your subject on the closest focussing point.... (at the lowest F nr ) and with a background far away.... (mmm, I wonder how long i am gonna keep editing this post.. ;-)a

people will get confused because bokeh is really refuring to the quality of the OOF areas. In those shots there is clearly a shallow DoF but its most certainly not a creamy bokeh type effect. Its confusing i know but hay....

As Leex says.... any lens can give you shallow DoF. Just dont expect the OOF areas to be hugely out of focus.... for me thats good as i like that effect. If your after smooth creamy BG's that you cant really make out i think you will have trouble with any UWA.

EDIT

oh and those shots are on full frame. FF has a 1 and a half stop shallower DoF i think it is. This makes these shots a lot harder to achieve on a crop sensor.

Bokeh is bokeh, it doesn't matter how 'creamy' it is.

Of course it won't get to the levels of bokeh from a f1.2 prime, I'm not expecting that. I just want to see if this lens can produce decent bokeh or not. It's not a matter of understanding or not.

The best example was the beer shot on the Tok, can't find it of course!

But I want a versatile lens, that's why I asked the question - I just wondered what f4 at 10mm looks like with a close subject.

Thanks leex, have looked there a bit, couldn't find many so I thought I'd ask here.

If youre looking at bokeh the way you describe than the question is answered very well i think.
Oh, and the 10-20 either 3.5 or 4-5.6, is definitely not a versatile lens...

i'll see if i can make some shots tonight in the way i think you want them... hope i have some time tonight.

This is one from a few weeks ago (already posted i think). If i wanted, i could have focussed a bit closer on my dog for a narrower dof, and thats makes a huge difference. As you can imagine, if the background was like, 40 feet away, it would be totally out of focus.

Versatile within it's 10-20 range. What do u think I mean?

Those shots weren't all taken on full frame btw - the Tokina seems to do bokeh relatively well (for an UWA) at 2.8 on a crop.

The canon can do it ok at f3.5, I just wanted to see an example of the Sigma at f4.0 - because I can't afford the Tok or the Canon, but I want a versatile UWA.

Thanks for the example - yeah I did mean a bit closer, it doesn't seem as good at f4, but that is a nice shot.

I appreciate your help, my apologies if I am being a pest :)
