there should be tiny movements between 3' to infinity because that area of the scale represents a HUGE range. But still if you are using spot metering and point at something a couple hunder feet away I would hope it goes to infinity.

Here is a test you might try to see if the scale is off and the lens is still focusing or the whole thing is foobar'd...on a very distant subject that should be in the infinity range of the lens, run a test shot with AF on then turn it off and manually focus on the same target but crank the focus to infinity...see if that makes a difference in the distant object.

I have read many lenses from many different mfg's can have probs so it's not unreasonable. Still one should expect perfect functioning from a new item.

Funny, I just did the exact same test as you suggested - with weird results.

I AF on a building a few hundred yards away (which read a little over 3 ft). Then took off AF, , manually set to infinity and took the same shot (3X each).

The AF shots were in focus, the infinity shots were out of focus.

Unless I'm missing something, this lens is having focusing problems - manual and AF!

I tried it on a building a mile away -- same results!

worst case is call Sigma and see what they suggest. Or if the store where you bought it allows exchanges take it in or call them and see what they might offer as a solution.

I might just be being a bit paranoid. Some research shows that SWAs do not always display accurate distance readings.

Could you look at yours and see if you get similar inaccurate readings?

Thanks...

Here's some from yesterday - please comment on sharpness of copy - I'm still not sure about this one and I still have 10 days to return:

Thanks, Adam. Is it your opinion that I shouldn't worry about distance indicator's lack of accuracy? Again, sometimes when I AF on distant buildings it reads under 3 feet. Still seems to AF OK though...

unless it interferes with the actual focusing, Forget about it :D, i have a sigma thats soft at 2.8( and i do mean SOFT) but a killer at 4.5, and i still use as my walk around lens.

and the af meter could be stuck, thats it. if you see the focus actually moving then everything is fine.

Ps: try putting it on manual and moving the focus ring two and fro very fast. see if it moves. the af meter i mean.

Moves fine in manual (it looks like the "meter" is actually one of the lens elements moving, so I'm not sure it could be stuck. Then again, I know little about what's inside this thing.)

I guess I can accept that the indicator is not accurate, if others' copies do the same thing. If not, I may bring it back to B&H and have them take a look -- I live only a few blocks away.

no matter what...since you are close, wander back and ask to compare to their demo lens and see what happens. Easy peace of mind, unless of course, you cannot be trusted to walk out of the "toy store" w/o new toys...hehehehehe...

BTW, here is a work in progress I am trying to get just right. It's one of the many murals around our town that are commissioned by a special mural society:

40d, f/11, 1/200s, ISO 800, 16mm, Spot Metering

No, I'm used to walking in and out of B&H w/o spending large sums.;)

Here's a nice tutorial on WA photography that I'm finding quite informative:

Brought Sigma back, compared to their demo copy. Its AF seemed to be a bit more accurate, but still was off intermittently. B&H rep apologized, said I got two lemons.

Took home a Canon 10-22mm and did some comparison tests, open, f8 and f11 at 10mm and 20mm. Canon's AF meter was always exact, AF is much faster and quieter. !00% crops show Canon sharper, especially in corners (although this might have to do with Sigma copy's AF problem.) Canon had better contrast and color. However, seemed to be a bit inferior in build quality. It's lighter, which is an advantage.

My brother, who is paying for half of the lens in return for my help on a interior shoot of his house (for which SWA is needed), very generously said he would make up the difference between the Sigma and the Canon, so that I am basically getting the Canon for $250 plus some work.

The big difference between the two lenses, for me, is that the Canon WORKS with my, 350D, the two Sigmas did not. I can't keep trying new copies of sigmas (B&H won't let me) For the same price, it makes sense for me to go with the Canon. I guess I can't post pics here anymore...:(

hey, it's just great ya got something that works for you!! And a bummer there were two bad Sigma's in succession. I wonder though, if these thngs do run in batches and it's possible for some simple production issue to cause some batches to be consistenly flaky.

No matter now ya can have some fun!!
