As I am mostly a wildlife shooter I have only had need of my 1Dx and long lenses for the past year or so. This is my only current body. Due to an upcoming summer trip to Norway I need to decide which landscape body I would like to take. Having already used my NEX5r for family stuff and biking I know the RAW files, even from this little beast, are amazing especially pulling shadows. So I am considering the investment in an A7R and metabones adaptor. But are you guys using mostly Sony/Zeiss lenses? I would of course like to have the sharpest for my landscapes but to keep my system cross compatible I am looking to use the 16-35 f4 IS on the A7r.

Anyone using this setup or similar? I appreciate it will be MF but focus peaking should help I guess.

Having seen RAW files from the 5DsR I am a little hesitant to spend €3k+ on one.

I only rented the A7r for a week to try it out as you plan to use it, and it worked great, the 16-35/4L works very well on the Sony. I used the cheapo Commlite adapter, not the $4x Metabones with no problems. Plan on manual focus, suggest setting picture style to neutral, -3 contrast, and play with the sharpness setting to get focus peaking working to your satisfaction (peaking works off the jpeg in liveview so the jpeg setting affects peaking sensitivity a lot) or just switch to magnified view to focus if you work more slowly.

To my surprise, I found the ability to focus handheld absolutely to my satisfaction to be an even bigger advantage of the A7r over my 5Dii than resolution or DR.

There are other factors having to do with longer lenses that have me waiting to see what Sony releases next, but for use as you describe using the 16-35/4L, the A7r is a treat.

That's a common combo for landscape. You'll be happy with it. Second on the commlite vs meta bones. Save yourself $300.

Cool thanks. It seem likely the A7rII will be same sensor with the upgrades given to the a7II. Trying to time a purchase when prices drop ;)

I would stick with the viltrox adapter, the commlite doesnt report lens used, only focal length. No doubt, it's the better made adapter, however, that's that.

the 16-35 F4 L works very well on the A7r. I've used nikon, canon, om, zeiss, and sony on the A7r, and the 16-35 is among the best I've used with it, no doubt. I used it with an L bracket on A7r body. I'de get it as early as possible, quite a learning curve for some folks. I know a few local shooters, that could never really figure out the sony system, and stuck with canikon.

there are user guides on youtube that can really get you up to speed very fast.

The A7r first started off as a "landscape" body for me as well...... that quickly spun out of control, and became my primary body, and selling off most of my canon stuff.

The EF 11-24mm f/4L USM on my a7R is blowing my mind. Still have the TS-E 17mm, but probably going to sell it. It looks soft by comparison.

The rest of my little lens collection are Canon-mount Zeiss lenses.

Very happy with the setup and mulling the notion of not even having a Canon camera (but I vacillate on that daily! ;)).

But 11-24 can't T or S :-D

Anyway I love AF even MF is ok mostly with my a7R. And my Zeiss FE 55 is somewhat boring after sometime ;-)a

My pick would be the new Zeiss Batis 85 & 25mm with a very lightweight tripod.

Happy travelling :-)

You are so right. I don't need T; Photoshop can T. But S is pretty hard to replicate.

You sold the Nikon 14-24 already?
So Canon 11-24 is 'better' than Nikon 14-24 them...
In this case, I might get one for 'private collection' then

It is amazing. Should note though that my first copy was a bit of a dud. But, I got a great one on the second try.

The 14-24mm has a nice color rendering to it; liked it a lot, but yes the 11-24mm pretty much destroys it. It is not only sharper but way-better distortion correction and is outstanding at controling flares (14-24mm is pretty poor at that).

Just notice our local price for 11-24 is A$4k

I start to wonder if I'm working for the bank or Canon

If I did more landscape the 11-24 would be top of the list but the whole filters and price thing, for now, put me off. I could sell the 200-400 though :o

I think the 16-35 is pretty damn good, I did test my Zeiss 21mm when I had one and on the 5DIII both were comparable. But the sensor would not resolve for either, the A7R would show up sharpness better. I already get confused with the NEX5 menus, Sony could work on that.

Anyone have problems with compressed RAWs? I should not be doing any star shots, mostly waterfalls I guess.

Thanks.

What filters do you need? Another thing I am enjoying about my a7R with 11-24mm is the Fotodiox ND Throttle. Works very well. Search out the ND throttle on Youtube; it will work with any Canon-mount lens. You don't get aperture control though. You have to pre-set the aperture you want on the lens before mounting it to the ND Throttle. But, on the plus side, you don't have to carry separate filters.

GNDs not possible with the 11-24 though. But, then, that's not so important when you're working with a 14-stop DR sensor like the a7R.

I don't notice anything regarding the compressed raw, don't worry about it.

The menu system indeed is poor. I'm still learning it a year and a half in.

Like the idea but I do use grads. For now I will be happy with the 16-35, if I need wider then I can stitch ;) I will stick with minimum outlay, most likely will not use the lens so much after the summer. Always nice to have though. My 17-40 has been a real champion but it is already showing weakness on an 18MP sensor, especially those corners.

So long as I can setup a custom button, delayed shutter (possible ?), f16, ISO100.... obviously no mirror lockup :)

When using the adapter with a tripod foot, is shake a problem as I have read?
