So getting back into photography as a more serious hobby after not updating equipment for a while. I have cs3 and it works fine BUT looking around at the new ps monthly payment options I'm not too excited about that option. I'd rather just buy it once and keep it for a while. So is monthly really my only option?

Also I found cs6 as a box set for $500. Should I just buy that? Is that a bad deal? Pros and cons of buying an old box set vs paying monthly.

Thanks in advance. :)

That same $500 would get you Lightroom AND Photoshop for 4 years ( assuming the $10/month price never goes up).

$10 per month for the latest version of both Photoshop AND Lightroom - I'm satisfied with that. For your $500 purchase of a not up-to-date version of Photoshop I'll have nearly 5 years worth of the latest and greatest of the two programs I use the most. Plus there's the extra 'cost' of paying all your money up-front vs. paying out a little at a time.

Kind of what I was thinking I would hear. Just thinking there is no way it will stay at $10/month. :( I just take pictures of my kids so seems silly adding a whole separate monthly charge just to edit photos. I suppose I'll prepay for the year then. It would tick my husband off every month that he saw the charge go through. ;) I thought about just getting elements but don't think I will really be happy with it ultimately.

Adobe free CS2
https://www.adobe.com …index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads (external link)
It's been asked, "Is it free, or not?"
Does anyone have an update on the free/not free issue?

He's got CS3, no reason to go backwards to CS2.

You can still purchase a perpetual license for CS6 thru Adobe. At this time Adobe is allowing CS6 ACR updates for new cameras, but not any new features. There are several enhancements to CS6 since CS3 was released, mainly to ACR and RAW processing which is much better. Some Content Aware tools are very useful as well.

A lot of people like the subscription plan, but I am not one of them. For me personally CC offers nothing I need over CS6. I may change my mind at some point in the future, but for now I'll stick with CS6.

Question: can you get the "stand alone" CS6 upgrade for CS3? If so, it should be much less than $500...

I have CS6 and and LR6. I won't do the rent-as-you-go plan. I am perfectly happy with it. Actually ACR9 is where it is at. ACR9 is fantastic.
If you rent it and stop, I hope you enjoy all the receipts because that is all you will have left.

I don't know if I can upgrade or not now. The version I bought initially was so long ago. Also it was the student version and we've moved since then. Not sure if I know where the disc or box even is. Plus bought it through my sister in law as the student.

The only question there is whether Adobe changed the rules for upgrading. It was that you could upgrade up to three versions back, I'm not sure if the policy is the same, you'd have to check. If it is, be sure and get the serial number. Plus, PS can only be installed on two computers, so if the CS3 is on more than one, you will have to deactivate one although if you install the upgrade on a computer that is running CS3 you should be OK.

I don't recall where the link is for the online upgrade to CS6 stand-alone, you have to click through a few things in the Adobe site. Maybe someone "in the know" can help and let us know if it's possible to upgrade from CS3!

If you have a Mac, just use Photos for a while and if you find you want to do more, you can always sign up for $10/mo - what do you have to lose?

His digital freedom to Adobe.

Photoshop CS6 is still available, but only those with version 5.x are eligible for Upgrade pricing. CS4 and earlier versions users like me are SOL.

See here: http://www.adobe.com …re_sl_creativesuite6.html (external link)

For now, CS4 does what I need and CaptureOne runs circles around ACR; but I'd like to have some $$ soon to get a copy of PS CS6 before Adobe finally retires it.

i have a boxed version of cs6 i could sell for half that. but first i want to see if i can still qualify for adobes 30/month promo for the whole suite for a year. i've been using PS/LR CC since it came out so i'm not sure if they'll still let me jump on that deal which is supposed to be for people who owned previous versions of PS

No, CS3 doesn't qualify for upgrade pricing. Adobe changed the policy and you can only get upgrade pricing for CS6 if you have CS5.
