Few birds from today's visit to the North Cave wetlands, UK.

...yyy...Long-tailed tit's friend that is. Certainly not mine judging by the look on that face :). BTW, could somebody ID this bird for me please, as I can't work this one out myself:

Hi,

Nice selection, well captured...

1. Blue Tit Fledgling/Juvenile
2. Blue Tit Fledgling/Juvenile - I say fledgling as the yellow gape in the corners of the beak are still very visible.
3. Juvenile Long-tailed Tit
4. Juvenile Long-tailed Tit
5. Whitethroat, probably male as there's no visible eye stripe
6. Female Chaffinch - not the best angle to ID from so could be wrong, it is a finch though.

Enjoyed checking these out, thanks for sharing

Kev

Thank you all for the comments.

Kev, how do you know these are juvenile and not adult long-tailed?

Thank you all for the comments.

Kev, how do you know these are juvenile and not adult long-tailed?

In the UK, Adults have white cheeks, and a black bar running up over the eye each side of the head and a very distinctive white "Mohican" stripe over the centre of the head.
Juveniles have a solid brown colour on the sides of the face/head and the beginnings of the white "mohican" which does get more defined as they age. They also have less of a pink hue to the white areas of their plumage, but the most defining feature is the brown side of the face/head.

Do a web image search for Long-tailed Tit's and most of the images that come up will show adults, and you'll see how different the head plumage is. For further confirmation web search for images using Juvenile Long-tailed Tit's and you'll see more that look just like yours.

If needed for ID's I also use RSPB website, on their A-Z of birds they have drawings for each bird, often Male/Female/Juvenile and also show similar birds for you to reference against, so for LTT's:

^^^Thank you for this explicit clarification. I am aware of the brown/black plumage implications, but what intrigues me is the red, prominent 'eye lids' colour seen in some of the LTTs, while others have them black. I was wondering if that could be an indication of the development stage, hence my question.

Thank you again for taking time to address my query.

Unable to specifically answer regarding eyelid colours, I did some searching,

Amongst my own images adult plumage birds were predominantly yellow, with some not easy to determine.

Online images - Juveniles generally seemed to be red, but adults varied from red, to yellow to black/difficult to determine.

Then I found this paper on the subject:

An interesting read.

Wonderful series.

Kev's IDs are spot on, not sure on the last one either, the buff colouring looks a bit warm but the tail under patterning looks right for a female chaffinch (http://www.ware.myzen.co.uk …%20f%20A_001_17-05-14.jpg (external link)).
