I've posted about online forum inequality before, this is just another example. Remember that roughly 90 of posts come from around 10%of the members. Of that 90%, 90% of activity comes from 10% of those members (or 1% of the total membership). Then you have to remember that if you look at the membership of all fora relating to photography, after you account for those that are members of multiple fora, we probably make up less than 1% of all DSLR owners/users. I would think that 90% of the TOTAL user base of DSLR/ILSC only have the camera/lens combination that they initially purchased, have not changed any setting from default and use only Green box or at the most adventureous the "Scene Modes".

So any poll on this or any other fora says absolutly zero about the average photographer/DSLR/ILSC user. It will even have very little significance to the views of the wider individual forum member.

Still it makes for some diverting forum interaction for a while, especially for someone like me who cannot easily get out and about, so relying on internet fora for a good part of my social interaction.

I'm one of those who use both methods, depending on the situation. I tend to try almost everything that's possible, but sometimes find certain ways of using the things not beneficiary to me. But I rarely leave something untried.

Some people just can't get away with BBF, my friend, an experienced photographer had never tried it, he tried for a week or so but could not get away with it.

I am surprised at two things with this poll. The first is that so few people are voting. The second is that 17% of people use the shutter button exclusively. I can understand going back and forth between shutter and back button. I only use the front button when using a remote, so I can get focus. I just switch to Green Box when handing my camera to someone else to grab a snap. I guess that amounts to shutter button.

What stands out to me is the 0% of folks who have tried BBAF and then gone back to the shutter button. This suggests (anecdotally) that the 17% of people who use the shutter button exclusively have never tried BBAF, because those who try it obviously, to my way of thinking, do not go back. Error in my logic? Too small a response to tell? Too specialized an audience to be valid? Any comments?

I did - once - see a post from someone who tried BBF and switched back to shutter. I haven't tried BBF on my SL1, but the 5D3 should arrive tomorrow, and I'll give it a try on that.

Can you BBF on a SL1? If so where are the settings?

People have said they have it set up; I haven't been able to find it. I didn't look that hard, though.

Custom functions IV-Operation/others: number 6, Shutter/Automatic Exposure lock button (*). See page 303 of the English language manual.

In short:
0: shutter= AF / *= AE lock
1: shutter= AE lock / * = AF
2: shutter=AF / * = AF lock. No AE lock.
3: shutter= AE / * = AF. No AE lock.

You can set it to AF with the * button, however the placement of the * button is much to far to the right to reach easily with your thumb, very awkward. On the SL1, it is the only Canon I have ever owned where I simply do not use BBF.

Let's see, the one you call SL1 is obviously the same as the 100D, right?

Yup, the U.S. Rebel SL1 is the 100D, at least in in Europe.

My normal mode it to use both - simultaneously. SB for the center or controlled AF point and BB for the saved focus point which is on the edge of the frame.

But I'll change modes as needed.

Today I made a conscious effort to use the BBF and kinda split it with the shutter button. Took about 600 shots. If I did not think about it I found myself with my finger half pressed on the shutter only. It was actually pretty good. Can't say which one was better as I'm so used to the shutter button but I'll start using it more often and see how that goes. I can see the advantages to it.

I've tried BBF a number of times and it doesn't feel natural. I only use AI Servo and Manual mode so I didn't see any advantage.
