Spot AF can indeed lead to inferior results and should be limited to situations described in the manual: "for pinpoint focusing of overlapping subjects such as an animal in a cage. Since Spot AF covers a very small area, focusing may be difficult during hand-held shooting or for a moving subject."
When I shot Portraits there are a lot of cases where the "normal" AF Point is much to large to be exactly on the eye. It often also covers part of the nose etc....
And I would call it a static subject. AI One Shot gives me a keeper rate around 90% Ai Servo maybe 20-30%
