As many of you know, the Elf owl is the world's smallest Owl. Tonight I brought a friend out for his first time ever shooting birds. We hung out listening to the Elf Owls in the dark for a while and then took some photos. I think it was a successful night! It was pitch black and we were finding the owls with a flashlight to shoot photos.

This centipede is only about 2 inches long

This time he has a caterpillar!!

This shot didnt turn out very sharp, but I like it anyway.

Definitely a successful night. Love seeing what these little guys are finding and preying upon after dark; great captures!

Exceedingly well done, Jeremy; I have no idea how you find owls in the dark; I'd need a lot of flashlight batteries, I think.

Thanks everyone.
That centipede and caterpillar do look delicious Rog.

I find the Owls by ear and then move slowly in that direction. They bark and we move to them.

really nice work, Jeremy - great shots! i have a hard enough time finding owls in daylight - after dark, it'd be hopeless!

Well done indeed Jeremy, those are some really tiny Owls. What, about 6" or so?

They are hard to find but if your ears work well
It's not too bad.

Bret, you are correct they are 6" or under. Typically about 5" tall. Think of a Coke can. They are about that big. It's crazy!

and i thought the northern pygmy owl i photographed this spring was small! sounds like these little guys are even smaller - though not by a lot...

You are correct. These are smaller. They are officially the smallest owl in the world. Pretty cool

I'd love a Northern Pygmy Owl. I'm in search of one down here. I have a general area but it's a Lon shot seeing one.
