Greetings everyone!

Sorry for posting if a thread existed for this topic already, I swear I searched for it but to no avail.

Now for the problem. When I got my 5D mark 3, I noticed that there was a white balance problem but I didn't realize it was that serious (or maybe its just me).
I always shoot with playing the WB temp (been like that for more than a year). I never have any problem with my 5D mark II with that. I notice there is a yellow cast in the pics. So I did an experiment. This is what I did... I did a side to side comparison. Pic is in RAW format. One is in AWB, the other in color temp. I started from 2500 and ended on 10,000. They never matched at all.

The settings are not shifted in camera.

Should I send it to canon? Anyone else experienced this?

Thank you for your time!

Sample.

Please take note that the middle picture was the closest I ever got (not even close right?!) from adjusting the color temp from 2500 to 10,000.

Fluorescent lamp about 20 ft high. The only difference with the pic is the WB. All settings are the same.

Try another light source before you gove up. The cycling of fluorescent lights means each shot may vary slightly. Its like hitting a moving target.

So here is my question. What is the the color temp of the pic with AWB? Since I tried changing the temp from 2500 upto 10,000, there should be one identical to it right? Or am I not understanding something? I posted one pic with 3 results and adjust just one setting. What am I doing wrong?

Again, fluorescent lights cycle. you might remember the old flicker of the tubes that was obvious to the naked eye. New fluorescent lights are less obvious but can still have isses with color blanace shifting from one part of the cycle to another so 2 shots taken in the same circumstances may have different white balance. Try a different light source.

Just postulating here... My RAW converter program gives me 2 variables for adjusting WB:

Temperature and Tint.

Going through the presets (AWB, Daylight, Shade, Tungsten Fluorescent etc) the program changes BOTH the Temperature and the Tint.

I suspect that you will never get the same results, starting from an arbitrary Tint (1.00 ?).

I would also recommend doing your testing in the shade rather than in artificial light.

One of the best writeups I've ever read can be found at http://lowel.tiffen.com …endering_demystified.html (external link)

People have mentioned fluorescent lighting. You should understand that these lights are turning on and off 60 times per second. During the cycle the white balance varies. Thus 25% into the beginning of the cycle is a different WB than the 25% at the end when the light is decaying.

Some related threads...

yup.

and yup to not shooting under fluorescent or even tungsten lighting too. Doing so just introduces more variables.

On my screen, the first (left most image) looks to have very good color balance. It is the one labeled AWB. So... what is the problem?
