Was checking through my pics today, and realised that the number of pics I've taken in AUTO in the past year is 10, all shots of my new baby when I just wasn't prepared to risk getting it wrong so I shot about 100 in various settings! I think I can be forgiven that...

But, bearing in mind the stick that's doled out to the 'all the gear no idea' brigade with $1000's of kit but always shoot in auto, in hindsight to have only taken 10 shots in auto in a year is almost some sort of boast isn't it?? Stats wise it worked out to about 50% AV, 30% TV, 20% M, with those auto ten thrown in but statistically insignificant.

So, how do your percentages break down? Aperture nerd, shutter speed enthusiast, full manual control freak, or easy peasy auto??

Heya,

AV most of the time (when I'm just shooting in general and not concerned with perfect exposure or control)
M the rest (when I'm in a controlled setting, such as a blind doing wildlife from there, or when using lighting equipment)
Across about 5 cameras, including full frame, APS-C & APS-H.

Nothing else.

Very best,

Manual 94 percent of the time
Av 5 percent
TV 1 percent
I'm pretty sure I've never taken a pic with my 6D in auto.

I'm coming to know when to use Av and liking the results. If I am not fully focused on taking pictures I will use it or maybe Tv.

Took a few with the XSI in auto, probably less than five percent over the life of the camera, and 99 percent of those were in the first few months. I only had the kit lens so it's not like I could have any creative control over DOF.

AV for me and dial in a bit of exposure compensation as needed...I mostly shoot landscapes, portraits etc and so depth of field is my primary concern...

circumstantial choice!

  1. If I want/need full control, Manual
  2. If I want DOF control and don't really care about shutter, Av
  3. If I need speed/motion control and don't really care about aperture, Tv

..but #3 is less than 1% of the time, #2 is maybe 55%, #1 is 45%

Never full auto

99% manual, the 1% if for the few times I loan my camera to someone. The more I shoot manual the more I like it. It makes life easier when doing the post processing for a shoot since all the settings are very similar.

Probably 50% Av, 25% Tv and 25% manual. That ratio is definitely going to move more toward manual with the 7D2 in hand. I honestly don't think I've ever used a full auto on a DSLR.

With the setup I'm using, I can't get to the specifics, but for a number of years when shooting with my two "main" cameras I have tended to shoot in Manual exposure, with some occasional sidetracking to Av or Tv if it seems appropriate/helpful.

I don't honestly recall shooting in Auto with either of those cameras. When shooting with a P&S camera I would do it in good light and not be picky about image "stuff". I also have left my daughter's 400D in Auto when she hands if to me and asks me to take a photo with it.

One interesting thing, though -- when shooting indoors with a mounted SpeedLite, I tend to balance ambient light with fill flash, often with the flash head raised and using a reflecting/bounce card (the 580 EX has them "built in". I have found in these situations that my manual exposure settings are very close to what you would get in P-Mode or even Auto Exposure! In fact there have been a few occasions where I wanted to act fast to "capture" something and I found that switching to P served well!

Haven't used anything other than manual in almost 5 years, prior to that it was mostly Aperture Priority (never really used Shutter Priority much) for about 2-3 years. Only used Auto for a couple months when I got my first camera and stopped once I got my first book on photography (and learned about AV,TV,and M)

Manual; I don't have any other choice. This said, of course, as long as a photo is good, it doesn't matter how it got that way.

Aperture Priority most of the time.

If I'm using Speedlite(s), Manual, usually.

I have always shot in Aperture Priority with the exception being my fish photos that are shot in manual due to off camera flash remotely triggered
