I have two 580EX IIs. One is experiencing a problem - all of my shots are over exposed, despite what settings I set on camera. When I switch out the flash for the other one, I get perfect exposure every time. Could still be something that I'm overlooking, so I haven't ruled out stupidity upon the user (me). Also, when I press the pilot light, there is a long series of mini flashes that lasts about 1.5 seconds.

Here's a video of my problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Whats on the LCD? I can't tell by looking at the video. Try removing the batteries, let it sit for 5 minutes, then put in freshly charged batteries.

The 1.5 second flash you are getting is called "Modeling Flash". It is supposed to do that. You will find it in the Custom Functions menu. Disable it, if you wish. It is in no way related to the overexposing problem.

Over-exposing every shot could have several causes.

#1. The flash itself, not on camera, is set to Manual and a high power setting. Put it back to ETTL.
#2. The flash itself, not on camera, is set to a large +FEC value. Flash setting will over-ride camera setting.
#3. The flash is not slid all the way into the hotshoe on the camera.
#4. The flash foot is bent.
#5. One of the contacts in the bottom of the flash (on the foot) is stuck. Press each with fingernail; should be spring-loaded.
#6. Not sure about this one, but maybe the batteries are weak. Try fresh batteries.

I hope one of these helps.

Thanks, everyone. The modeling flash was indeed the culprit. Not sure how the custom settings got changed. When I changed that, the exposures seem to have decided to behave as well. Not sure what was happening. Maybe I was so distracted by the pilot light/modeling light issue that I wasn't thinking straight regarding manual settings.

Appreciate all the help!
