Canon 7D focus problems

I’m using a Canon 700-200 2.8 , AF, Stabilizer on and set to mode 1
Most pics are shot on manual at 1/100, f11 and iso at 100
Camera is set to A1 Servo, high speed continuous
I do not use back button focus
Tracking is set to case 4 for subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly
For 2 yrs. I’ve used my 5D MK 111 when panning with no issues
I took 2-3 hrs of pics from the grandstands at a drag race and few if any are any good
Anybody else have an issue similar to mine

If you're using a 70-200 2.8 lens and a shutter speed of only 1/100 I expect most of you're problems camera shake issues. I think you need to try a much faster shutter speed - try to keep it above 1/250 at least!

You can't pan at 1/250 of a sec
I pan at 1/100>>1/160 continually

I think it could bethe IS Mode 1 causing you problems. You really should have it in Mode 2 for panning. I do not have the 70-200 but do use the 100-400 MK 1 for panning at shutter speeds of 1/160 regularly. I have to say that I have always made sure that I used Mode 2. Last year I hired the Tamron 150-600 for an airshow. This lens has no panning mode for the VC system, and it caused me lots of problems at the lower shutter speeds, although it was useable at shutter speeds above 1/1000. I think you may be seeing feedback issues from the wrong IS mode.

I think BigAl is right. IS mode 1 stabilizes vertical and horizontal movement. Mode 2 only stabilizes vertical. When you are panning, Mode 1 will fight it. I've seen this with the 70-200 2.8, 70-300L and Tamron 150-600.

It's actually smarter than that, since it stabilizes only in the direction you are not panning. Regardless of whether that's vertical or horizontal.

This is a 7DII, correct? I don't recall that the 7D had preset AF mode cases, although you could manually manipulate the variables that define the tracking behavior.

I used to pan karts at 1/200 on my 1D4. I am on the track with them and they have no suspension so 1/200 is a good compromise for me.

Not sure if its the crop factor or what, but all else being equal, I had to move to 1/250 with the 7d2 to get similar amounts of keepers.

Always mode 2 on IS. Sometimes mode 3 with the 100-400II.
