This was the first time I saw redstart nesting in one of our birdhouses. They were sitting often on the same branches near the house, but not very easy to get close. This picture is quite heavely cropped.

Nice one Olli, I've only seen them once and he was fast!

Wow lovely shots Olli.

They are normally quite hard to approach. I found a nest is a dead tree one year, once they had the brood hatched and were committed to the feeding the brood one was able to get within 10-12 ft, I had a blast (https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1308210). Wish I'd had the 150-600 then but was using the 300/4 IS+1.4X at the time.

You can probably work in closer, if they slow down visits to the next back off.

Thanks! Though they are quite common, you won't see them too often, and yes, they are fast.

You got quite close Lester! Seeing them during feeding surely helps to get near them. I did'n had my 7D at hand, had to use 5D2 with 100-400 - not the best combo for bird shooting. :)

That is a beautiful shot of the couple! I have never seen these birds before. The male's coloring is quite striking.
