Have a 7d, should I upgrade to 7d2?

Hi all, I'm in a little predicament, I have had a 7d for about 3 years, the shutter count is up around 60k and I'm perfectly happy with it for all but low light sports shooting
I can't go above iso 3200 without serious work in PP, I'm happy with the AF performance and the burst rate etc but I just need better Hi Iso performance

I'm using a 70-200 2.8 mostly for field sports so I need the 1.6x Crop to get reach i'm after, If it gets really dark I'll swap over to my 6d and lose some reach and burst/af performance

how does a 7d2 perform at iso 6400-8000?

Not just yes but Hell Yes.

I did.. and the trusty old 7D as a back up in one of the Pelican cases...
But the ol' 7D hasn't seen the light of day for over 6 months. Just too much work in PP by comparison to the 7D2.

Lets see why the 7D2:

- cleaner shots at the ends of the histogram
- way the hell less PP required
- faster fps
- denser sensor
- AF: way the hell faster/ more accurate/more choices/more #of cross points filling way more field of view
- kick ass "nubbin" lever on the back
- great weather resistance (not up to my X's standards - where I've rinsed them under the faucet, but really, really good)

If ONLY for better low-light performance, I'd say no; it isn't that much of a jump on the MkI (1/3-2/3 stop max). However, it IS a nice upgrade for all the reasons from an earlier poster. If you have the disposable income and would like something newer you can hardly go wrong.

Also, being able to MFA zooms at each end and having a built-in bulb timer/intervalometer are really nice bonuses.

The hi iso performance is what I'm after but the next step up is 1dx and there is no chance of me being able to afford that, If I can shoot usable images at iso 6400 I willbe happy, currently with my 7d 1600 is ok 3200 is managable just,
Shooting Rugby at night I need shutter speeds of about 1/1200th to get what i'm after so hopefully that 2/3 of a stop will be enough, I can shoot with my 6d but I lose reach and af, burst speed and af performance.
Also, I think i should be able to get around $600nzd for my 7d and the 7d2 will cost me $2100nzd so a net cost of $1500nzd would be nice

Now i'm just convincing myself that i'm making the right decision lol

I think the 7D mk2 is a solid 1 stop more usable ISO over the 7D.

I find ISO 3200 very usable and ISO 4000 if i have to. I don't shoot sports but low light dances and events without flash at F/1.8 - F/2.8. With stadium lights you could push it further then i do with that little bit of extra light.

With how big the step up is from the old 7D, i don't see why everyone has not already upgraded to the 7D mk2.

I will admit that it was nice to get some (casually) usable shots at ISO 10000...

Great examples, I'll be shooting mostly at f2.8 and under some reasonably good stadium lighting so I think I'll be happy, some of your shots at iso 12800 are better than my 7d at 3200. Thanks for sharing

Those are great examples of what I'm after, a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action but without loosing too much "pop"

Obviously there is nothing like real world user feedback but a side-by-side comparison in controlled conditions also has its place such as the following low light comparison:

I would say based on that 7DII ISO 6400 seems to be about on par with 7D ISO 3200, and seems better than 5DIII ISO 12800. So about one stop improvement from 7D to 7DII and another half a stop or so from 7DII to 5DIII.
