What follows is my first attempt at photographing ski racing. Anything good here I owe to Primoz. The mistakes are mine. This was a local GS type race with skiers who were mostly former World Cup skiers.I wanted to get the skiers coming out of a sharp turn on a steep pitch. I had skied to what I thought was a safe place to set up my monopod. But because I did not have crampons I was limited to a flat area which was more than 75 meters from the gate I was interested in. I was supposed to have a radio to tell me when the racers were starting, but I did not. So I had to be ready to shoot at a moment's notice.
I used my 1Dn Markll with a 300mm 2.8 lens. I wish I brought my 1.4x teleconverter. I had to do a lot of cropping with a loss of detail. Exposure was ISO 200 spot meter mode shutter priority at 1/500. I shot RAW and used ACR. I am not that good with sharpening or noise reduction yet.
Thanks,
Jonathan
