We don't have any Bluebirds in the area. Too many English Sparrows and Starlings ![]() Do you put those meal worms out in feeders for them? Thank you. As you can tell bluebirds are a big favorite of mine. I have worked hard to attract and keep them here. Yes I feed the mealworms all year round. Bluebirds find them irresistible. I put up nestboxes on properly baffled poles and I am vigilant at evicting the sparrows. I also feed nothing that sparrows are attracted too and use upside down suet feeders. I never feed millet or corn. I use nylar tape on my feeders and nest boxes. It is a commitment but very rewarding. I also use a mealworm feeder with holes to small for starlings. Occasional they can stick their head through a hole and grab a couple but they seem to get frustrated and leave. The bluebirds are worth the effort!

Jun 11, 2015 07:20 | #8 ptcanon3ti wrote in post #17592642 Your efforts are rewarded greatly! Do you offer the dried mealworms? They seem really expensive. What does the nylar tape do? I feed the dried mealworms or canned ones in the winter when it is too cold to feed the live ones. They will eat the dried ones but you need to rehydrate. However, the canned mealworms, they like just as well as the live ones as they are moist. You can use nylar ribbon or any shiny ribbon to hang on your feeders and nest boxes. The sparrows hate it as they are easy to spook. All the desirable birds just ignore it. Monitor often and adjust as needed. Some people trap and kill the sparrows. I do not do that. If one enters a nestbox I will bang on it and open the box; take it down for a week and put the shiny tape on the top or on both sides of the entrance hole about 2 inches from the hole on either side. Sometimes string will work too. You just have to watch and adjust as needed. The bluebirds are really smart and they get to know you and appreciate all the effort. It is really cute!

These beautiful birds bring so much joy and are facinating to watch. They are also great at consuming losts of bugs. Another added bonus of having nest boxes are the wonderful tree swallows who also will take up residence in the nest boxes. They also consume lots of bugs and are beautiful to watch and they blue birds and the tree swallows are very respectful and peacefully coexist together. I have also found the tree swallows are really good at helping to keep the sparrows away too. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/utmGMN IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/ucc5a1
