Hi
I have a 17" Sony Viao Full HD Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. 64 Bit I& 2.00 GHz with 8GB RAM

It has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M with 4 GB RAM and 1 GB Dediicated Video Ram

I Want a colour certified monitor ( this is ) that will enable me to see 4K level resolution. Purely used for editing full frame 5D3 photos. Not used for gaming or movies etc.

Will I be able to get it to display the 5760x3840 photos at the monitors highest resolution 3840 x 2160?

I am assuming the monitor will upscale the laptop output? or is that limited to the graphics card? if the latter how can I find out in advance if this will work.
How do I connect it ? HDMI ?
As you can tell I am totally lost technically on this, so any help / advice or pointers much appreciated.

Note : There was some issue before, [But cant 100% remember] when I tried to play the laptop's Blu Ray read/writer connected to my TV via HDMI - that it would not display 1920x1080p. I have a recollection Sony Technical said that was right and that it only plays 1080/24p on the laptop monitor. [Strange for a top of the range Multimedia Laptop. But I would have to hook it up again to see if my memory was correct. Just thought I would mention it.

Thanks Peter

I would not be too optimistic about this pairing so should you purchase make sure you can easily return the product.

On the features tab for the 540M, found at http://www.geforce.com …/geforce-gt-540m/features (external link) it clearly states "Able to drive industry’s largest and highest resolution flat-panel displays up to 2560x1600.

In addition, the is an Amazon UK page with reviews/questions and one question presented has to do with scaling internal to the monitor. The response is "No this monitor is designed to run at the native 4K resolution it does not have a built in Scaler." That essentially means that if the video card doesn't deliver 4K resolution, the monitor can't do any scaling to get you to 4K either.

Thanks John
In the interim I asked the question on Amazon and found the features page on GeForce.

As mine was a custom configured Sony they dont give you a Spec formthe laptop.

I would agree that monitor would only give me at best 2560 x 1600 ( assuming Sony didnt fiddle with it :( )

It also seems its impossible to upgrade it, power/ heat sink change?/ Support in the Bios/ probably soldered onto the motherboard etc.

I do like the idea, that it comes 100% colour calibrated. I just wonder if 2560 x 1600 will ne a big improvement for my photo editing?

On thing I dont completely understand is ..... When I view a 5D3 RAW image and scroll around - am I actually seing the full image or is it after pixel binning?

I just replaced my ancient HP LP2065 (1600x1200) monitor with a Dell U2515H, which is 25" 2560x1440 99% sRGB panel. I'm using this on a late 2011 Macbook Pro, which is limited to 2560x1440 max, similar to your Sony. The higher pixel density takes a little getting used to, but not in a bad way. The thing to keep in mind that with the higher pixel density, when you zoom to 100% magnification, the pixels are smaller. So, the effect is that there is less zoom but you see more of the image. This may not be a great thing if you're a pixel peeper, but I find that it is really nice for practical editing purposes. I turned the brightness and sharpness down quite a lot, and I've been really happy with the results with factory color settings.

The other monitor that I looked at in the same price range was the U2413, which is a 1920x1200 panel, but it has a 99% aRGB color gamut, which would be great for photo editing. It should offer smoother gradients and more precise color.

Thanks for the info.
May I Ask how did you connect your monitor? Did you use the HDMI OUTPUT or other connection?

your laptop has only got HDMI connection so your going to have to use that.

Connecting a laptop to a TV is different than connecting to a monitor. the monitor your looking at does have a HDMI connection but even if the monitor your looking at doesn't have a connection you can get a HDMI to Display Port cable.

The question is of course is if the laptop supports that resolution.
