Alright I have a love hate relationship with my 7d and I'm replacing it. I mostly shoot wildlife and use a 500mm mkI for the most part. I haven't kept up with the new bodies coming out and had planned on getting a used 1D IV as the prices have come down quite a bit. Although I found many posts praising the 7D II over the ID IV now.

The main thing I don't like about my 7D is the focusing, I don't feel it's up to snuff. I do like the spot focusing but find I missed all the focus points my old 1D MIIN had. There are getting to be more and more used 1D IV's on the market which is nice but of course not many used 7D II's.

Is comparing these two like splitting hairs at this point? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I went from a 7D to 1DIV and have no regrets.

Have you thought about a 5D MkIII? My instinct is to always buy the newest technology ....sensors in particular. Although the NkIV is an incredible camera, the sensor technology is somewhat old by today's standards. Don't get me wrong, the MkIV is a heck of a camera. Try a 5d MkIII. B&H have a thirty return policy. Or, rent a MkIV and a5d MkIII and compare.

Thanks for the replies. I have actually used the 5d III and it's truly a great camera. Love the photos that come from it and the silent shutter mode. Just not sure if it's the best wildlife body reach wise.

For what it's worth, I have a 7D and a 7D II and the 7D II is heads and tails better than the 7D although I liked it just fine. There is a learning curve for focus on the 7D II.

I managed to briefly try out both the 1D IV and 7D II this week at my local camera shop. The 1D felt and sounded like a beast. Then I found the controls much more archaic than my current 7d. Had trouble changing focusing modes and points quickly.

The 7D II was soo quiet in comparison! Which I feel is a nice feature as some animals don't seem to like the shutter sound. Also switching settings can be done much more efficiently on the 7D II.

Doing a quick comparison hand holding my 500mm with each body, image quality seemed very close. I feel I'm more sold on the 7d II but then I also need to add a grip to it which aren't exactly cheap. I would rather buy used as it saves me money in the end. Most of the 1D IV's are pretty high mileage for sale right now and not many 7D II's for sale.

Skip the Grip. Buy an extra battery it's cheaper :)

FWIW I've been using Vello brand grips for my 6D & 5dIII. They're awesome for the money though IDK if OEM maintains weather sealing in a way that off brands don't. save some $$$ with a 3rd party.

Ditto on the third party grip. I have one on my 5dMkIII. It works well. Way cheaper too. Also, I would never let the grip issue affect my decision on the camera.....you like the 7dII, it;s easier to use, quieter, and way newer sensor technology. Even if you had to pay for the OEM grip, why buy your second choice?

We do pet photography and are looking towards the 7DII instead of the 5DIII, 6D or 1D. The AF focusing is what we are mainly looking for, as well as how inexpensive it can be found for.
