So i have now been through the following:
350D
700D
1D Mark IIN
5D Mark II

I have been thinking yanno what? i need to settle on a camera i like and that works for me...
So as for what do i shoot?

WELL>>
Mainly motorsports, I cover drifting events and the occasional bit of drag racing, i also cover car shows (static cars) and the ocasional car club meet (most of these i do as a long exposure with torches as they're at night) I also shoot for the Guide Dogs UK.

Lens wise i'm using a Canon 24-70 f2.8 mk1, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and a Canon 50 1.8 mk2.

Sadly i can't afford to have multiple cameras so what i end up with is what i'll have.
So the question.... Do i sell the 5D Mark II and get a 1D Mark III or a 7D Mark I?

It seems to me that all of those cameras that you listed will do a fine job for the subjects that you mention. With all due respect, it sounds like you're primary focus is gear collecting. If it were me, I'd stick with what I have. I just bought a new camera partly because my 40D is seven years old and my 20D is even older than that.

(I really shouldn't venture into the gear threads. I don't fit in.)

Everything you shoot can be done with a 6D. Your glass will amaze you on full frame. Your low/poor light issues will significantly lessen with a 6D.

The OP already has a full frame body - - the 5D2.

Since you shoot motorsports, the logical upgrade would be something with a more advanced auto focus system. If you want to stay with full frame, that would be a 5D3. If full frame is not a requirement, then either a 7D2 or used 1D3 or 1D4.

Why not just sell the 350D for what you can get, keep the 5D and save up get a low mileage 7D, looking at used prices (MPB has them from just under £400 and there is one on another Forum for £300) they sell for not a lot.
Its probably cheaper than continually trading and you get two decent cameras.
Having the two different bodies does make life a lot easier

yeah, i'm tempted to go back to two cameras but the 350 is kept more for the wife who doesn't really do photography but likes to take the odd snap.
i'd also rather have just the one for taking to busy shows etc where it can be annoying having two cams slapping arround.

Why do you think your 5DII is lacking?

My main issue is the AF on the camera, i feel it is more suited to static subjects. I recently used it at a gig and it was great for low light but when shooting puppies (that sounds bad) i found it really hard to keep focus as they were running around like maniacs!

I also miss the fps burst and buffer when i'm shooting the drifters. i have missed that split second shot where flames are out the back of a car (as an example)

aww, puppies. :p

part of me wonders if you hadn't changed bodies so often if you might have the money for a 7DII? after selling your other two cameras at least.

IMO, either save up some cash and get the 7DII, or either of the 1D Mark III or a 7D Mark I would do the trick for now. My guess is that if you go with the used camera now, you will be buying a used 7DII in a year or so and probably end up spending the same amount of money.

well if it is an even trade, I'd just go with the one you find first in good condition with low shutter count.

are the cameras pretty much similarly priced to the 5D2?

A 50D or a 60D or a 7D would tidy you over for a year or until you feel you can afford a 7DII.

I don't think that a 6D will offer any significant incremental improvement over your 5DII.
