Do the STM zooms have internal-only mechanisms?

I'm thinking of, for one of my crop bodies, picking up a couple STM zooms, most likely the simple 18-55 and the 55-250 that have been popular for years, but only recently were made in the STM versions.

Does the barrel extend on these? If so, then I doubt I'd upgrade (as we already have the previous 18-55 and 55-250 kit lenses).

Thanks

This is much more expensive proposition, but why not look at the 17-40 and 70-200 f/4L IS? Both will offer better IQ than their EFs STM counterparts. Both will also work on your 6D. Both are more significant upgrades. Both cost significantly more. I sold all my EFs lenses after acquiring a 6D. I had: 10-22, 60 2.8, 15-85, 18-55 II, 55-250 II, Tamron 17-50, all quite respectable lenses in their own right. I don't miss any of them. My two favorite lenses on apsc are 28 1.8, and 50 1.4.

This isn't for my 6D. It's for our crop body that my daughter uses.

What is the problem with putting a 17-40 or 70-200 on a crop body? Both will yield better results than the 18-55 STM or 55-250 STM. The STM lenses are a lot less expensive, and that is a valid point. Being a relative cheap-skate, I can relate to that! But buying one lens that works on both formats has its advantages, too.

The goal seems to be upgrade on the cheap, but the stm lenses are the same construction with a new motor.

I only own one STM lens - the 24-105. I have no complaints about it, on either the 60D or 6D. For $350 LINB (from someone's kit) it was a better deal than $500+ for a 24-105L, to me. But it also works on both formats.

I don't mean to be rude, but I am still curious about whether the barrels extend or not on the STM zoom lenses.

Thanks

Apologies, Mike. 10-18, no. 18-55, 18-135, 55-250, 24-105: yes.

I know the lens extends on the 55-250 STM..... but the front element doesn't rotate when you auto focus which is a huge advantage if you use a CPL. That is the only STM lens we have. I'm pretty sure the 18-55 STM and the 18-135 also extend but don't rotate during AF as well.

I would be surprised if any EF-S zoom doesn't extend. I don't think you get internal zooming until you get to some of the L lenses (one of the 70-200s for example). I know first hand that the 70-300L and the 100-400ii L both extend when zooming, so the L designation alone doesn't guarantee non-extending.

EF-S and STM are two entirely different things. Neither implies the other.

My bad. I forgot about the newish 24-105 STM. Is that the only EF STM lens at the moment?

Nope. EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and 50mm f/1.8 STM both recently released.

Thanks. I was thinking of zooms and totally forgot about the EF 40 and 50 STMs.
