hi going to buy a 2nd hand lens for videoing on my 70d. the canon seems to have decent reviews and is cheap enough. is there anything better for the same money or just stick with my first choice?

many thanks

the STM version of the lens is a much better choice, especially with video on a 70D

Yeah the STM version of that lens is simply a stunning lens for the price and the STM is perfect for video.

Another plus for the STM.

I don't know about the original, but part of me wanted to get the 7D2 instead of the 5D3 just so I could use that lens on my good body.

I bought the 18-135mm STM specifically for video which it does very well. Also a very useful general purpose stills lens.

This coming from someone who loves his fast primes.

As an alternative, the 18-55mm STM is a good choice for video, and is so cheap you don't have to worry too much about breaking it.
The 18-135 STM is a great choice, but if you don't need the larger zoom range or if you're shooting in situations where you'd have concerns about damaging the lens, the 18-55 STM is also worth a look.

If you buy the new STM version of that lens, which was built to work with the video on the 70D, you will get smooth and silent auto focusing during video. If you use the older 18-135 IS, the auto focus will not be smooth at all and will be very obvious. and the noise of the focus motor will be recorded. Its a no brainer. If you intend to buy this lens specifically for video you must buy the STM version or you will be wasting your money. Eventually you will sell it and get the STM version anyway. If necessary save up for it. They are not the same lens, not even close.

I have used the STM VERSION of the lens with my friend's much older T2i body and it absolutely shines.
Get one used off this forum. Save up for a fast prime like the new 50 f1.8 stm and you're set.

This one may already be sold, but you can sak

I just bought a used 18-135 STM for an upcoming vacation. I haven't taken it out into the real world yet, but just playing around with it inside I was really impressed with the AF speed.

Glad to hear that the STM version of the lens is better.
I had the original 18-135, and was not happy under 24mm or over about 100mm where it was not sharp.
