So I am going on a seven-day Mediterranean cruise in a couple of weeks. Recently I bought a nice little Canon G7X, which has RAW, a decent sensor size and a 25-100mm equivalent lens. It fits onto a belt-mounted case and I am very happy with the picture quality. I can even get up to ISO 1600 and still have something I can work with.

So, a big part of me wants to travel light and use only that as camera as my main camera.

But... it's hard to go travelling without the SLR!

The only thing I would be missing when compared to the SLR is the longer end... I have nothing above 100mm. Yet any time I've been around the Med it's been so dusty that I questioned the value of a telephoto.

My question, then: is there much use for a telephoto on cruises?

Haven't been on a cruise (except for 30 mins at the Falkirk Wheel on Saturday  ) but now live in Spain - I'd take the slr, just don't like to limit my options!

PS - It was so wet with heavy drizzle on Saturday afternoon, couldn't get any decent pics

Yeah, that "limiting myself" is exactly why I am having second thoughts...

Here's one of the Wheel to remind you :-)

Been on a cruise around Skandinavian countries once, and found that not much time is spent on land, so just a compact camera will suffice. I would still take the DSLR and a telephoto lens for shots from aboard the ship of the land as you cruise by, but leave it in the cabin for the rest of the time.

Well, that's me back. I ended up taking my G7X, but also the old 350D with a 70-200mm f4.

I haven't really processed many of the pictures, but I think that what I ended up with was a reasonable compromise. The G7X did pretty well most of the time, though there is a bit of CA that I may have to work through. The only time I really felt it let me down was at one of the ice shows, where the movement was just so fast that the G7X's focusing mechanism couldn't keep up.

The 350D was used only for shots of more distant objects, or of the land from the ship. I don't think it made many more than about thirty shots throughout the week, but it was nice to have.

I use the telephoto for landscapes when on a cruise

All taken from the ship deck with a 150-600 tammy
