Just looking for some input, I have been wearing a long sleeve button down white dress shirt for weddings I have covered. I am wondering what peoples opinions are on short sleeved dress shirts. Also would you feel comfortable wearing a white "polo" type collared shirt instead of a button down shirt?

My wife acts as my assistant and 2nd shooter, she has been wearing a long skirt and nice blouse, what are the female photographers out there wearing?

For weddings, I'd stick with a dress shirt. You could go black too. Weddings tend to be a formal event, and due respect should be given in how you appear.

Of course there are exceptions!

Personally, I would never wear a polo to anyone's wedding.

Although I am not a fan of long sleeves in warmer conditions, my default solution is a light weight dress shirt, and roll the sleeves up ;)

I am not sure why that look seems more acceptable to me than short sleeved dress shirts. Short sleeved button downs just look so early 1960's Nasa geek to me.

(not that there's anything wrong with that! :) )

I wear black on black for formal shoots. I have a long sleeve black shirt; I roll up the sleeves after a while if it gets hot. For a wedding, a suit jacket too.

I plan to pick up a couple black shirts as well (I am a big guy and black makes me look a little smaller, so thats an added bonus). I will stick with the button downs, it was just something I thought I would toss out there as the wife and I were talking about shirts over the weekend.

black might also help in avoiding catching your own reflection in something shiny, tends to look more like a shadow.

I try to blend in. I wear a black button up shirt, black vest, black dress pants, black socks, and black dress shoes. Unless they request I wear or don't wear a specific color. This weekend is outdoors and supposed to be hot. I will probably wear dress shorts with a black button up. I always roll my sleeves up (looks better than short sleeve button ups) and black dress shoes. I hate ties so I never wear one. I also keep a nice black hand towel tucked into my belt with a white "C" embroidered on it. I use it for sweat! :)

My dad is a meat cutter, so white button ups always remind me of that.

I've only acted as 2nd shooter in a few weddings before and always wore black pants with a nice blouse. Soon I will do my first primary shooter wedding and will probably stick to the same. But women have an easier life when it comes to attire. Though my pants are cargo type with pockets but still looking smart :) My primary photogs always had dark pants on and a nice shirt but not necessarily ties, particularly in our stinky hot climate :)

I always figured shorts, even dress shorts was an automatic no go when it comes to weddings.

Me too! But I look good in shorts! lol.
Nah, its going to be 80s with HIGH humidity here. AND the reception is in a barn!I would love to wear linen pants actually. They said for me to just dress comfy and not to worry about dressing "too dressy." I still may wear my dress pants; they are pretty light weight.

It's a farm/country themed wedding/reception. I actually thought about wearing a flannel and jeans with cowboy boots. I'd look like a lumber jack with my beard but I'd prly lose 10lbs in sweat! I always run anything like that by them first though. I also try to have fun with them and the guests.

I refer to the short sleeve + tie look as 'The Sipowicz'. I don't think it's very flattering, but that's just me.

On all the weddings I've shot I've worn long sleeved shirt (usually white) black slacks, and a suit style black or navy jacket with a tie that's not buttoned at the neck, but pulled up so it looks like
I wear a shirt and tie (unbuttoned but pulled up so it looks like it isn't) black slacks and either a black or very dark navy jacket. Never had a problem.

I go short sleeved button down shirt in white or very light colours, and khakis, with sneakers. Nobody has ever complained, from cheapo weddings to $17,000 weddings in the nicest venues around. I'm not a guest; I dress for optimal performance. I would feel like dying in long sleeves and black shirts

I see a lot of photographers and videographers shooting in shors and colorful tops. I find it very unprofessional.
And I bet so do all the clients, even though they may not say anything.

It's a wedding. Everyone is in formal attire and all the vendors should at least try to blend in. There's no reason to wear a suit in 30C weather, but at least don't wear sandals, shorts and yellow t-shirt with funny slogans...
