I decided that since its so damn hot by 8am (90 degrees) and over 100 degrees by 10:30 that I might as well set up a little perch in my backyard and see what shows up.

I grabbed a dead Cholla cactus skeleton from the desert and put it in a large pot. Filled it with dirt and set it on my back fence pillar. Threw some seed in there and sat in my chair with my tripod.
This is a VERY different way for me to shoot pictures. I have always hiked and shot and this will take some getting used to. Here are some of my photos from yesterday and this morning.

Male Gambel's Quail (on my fence)

I also got some photos of a female Bronzed cowbird and a few Brown Cowbirds. But I don't like the composition so I didn't process them.

Very interesting "backyarders" Jeremy!
I think many here would love to have quail wander up and sit on our fence...I know I would. I'd suspect the White-winged were pleased with your offering too.
Gotta say I love your Thrashers out there. They certainly have what looks to be formidable beak! Nice job.

Good work with some great species, Jeremy. Backyard birding should not be discounted. I've seen about 130 species on, over, or within a stone's throw of our property, about half of the total number our county has to offer.

Thanks all.
I'm going to make a few modifications to the backyard.
I'm going to run branches and zip tie them to
The top of my fence. That way I get a natural looking perch when they're on the fence.

I'm going to get another pot or 2 and put normal branches/perches in it.
I'm looking into a water feature becaus nothing brings in birds in the desert like water.

Excellent images of some cool birds. Your backyard is more interesting than mine!

Thank you everyone.

My backyard seems boring to me but I guess to people from other areas these birds are uncommon.

During certain times my yard is very busy. Just not right now.

Very nice set Jeremy. Except for the Finch the other birds are never in my area, I've seen the Quail before when traveling but the Dove and Thrasher are new to me.
Sometimes I think we all get a little bored with where we live and fail to see things the same as a newcomer might. Where I live, waiting for birds to come to water or food is extremely boring this time of year, they just don't show up because they have all they need everywhere. Now when winter comes, some Black Sunflower seed can keep you busy and of course staying warm can be a problem. We do have our different climates, birds and animals to make it an interesting World.
Well done whether stalking or waiting from what I've seen and almost always a new bird for me, appreciate your posts.

Thanks Steve.
I think you're right. We often lose track thy the world is large with varied climates and species.

It's good to share your local birds too.

I'm going back out tomorrow AM. I changed my seating position to hopefully get a better background. Stay tuned.
