I seem to always have a hard time with Reds. Not sure if I can make this image better, red seems to include magenta and then when I'm processing it the oranges come out. It wasn't the right time of day and I didn't use my grey card. Attached is my effort with Lightroom. Also linking to the raw image. To me, the rose is just flat, lacks any edge or dimension. The red channel doesn't seem to be cliipped though. Its not my best photo, I was watching for birds in flight and had the settings for that, then saw this butterfly just over the fence. Still, the reds make me go blah!

I'm just going to say this is a common problem with digital. It can also be worse with certain camera/raw processor combinations. I also have similar problems with certain purple-blue ish colors.

Is this a 7DII? I can't open the CR2 file and don't have the latest DPP. The 7D had problems with reds with certain raw converters, so that might not be helping.

EDIT: Just looked at your gear. 7DII was a good guess. I wonder how it would compare with the 5D in a similar situation (I know you can't repeat this shot)?

I took a shot at it. Not sure exactly what shade that you are looking for though.

Good idea, the rose is still there and I can do a test with the 5D. Are there known raw converters than handle it better? I did research on this red problem a bit ago then tried what I found on a previous shoot and didn't really see any improvement.

Thanks that looks good with more uniform color. What PP program did you use for that? I'm going to get up close and make a mental note of the actual color when I can get out there.

Here is another question, I usually shoot only in raw, should I shoot in raw+jpeg for the jpeg to capture the colors (for better matching in PP) or would the picture styles mess that up. Just a thought.

I used PERFECT PHOTO SUITE 9.5 (external link), specifically the Perfect Effects module. There is a color change filter there.

With regard to the RAW+JPEG idea; probably not a great one on two grounds:

  1. The JPEG IS affected by the choice of picture style. Probably "Faithful(0, 0, 0, 0)" would be the closest.
  2. You don't have to use RAW+JPEG to see a great looking JPEG preview. You can always get one with IJFR (external link). Be advised though, that the JPEG files are highly compressed(very small in size) and probably not suitable for "presentation" JPEGS.

Camera light meters are dumb. They look at the full spectrum. If you have a primary color that is putting out more photons that everything else, relatively, there's a risk that it's going to be clipped. In your case, I think the red is much brighter than the rest. If you look at the RGB histogram, I'll bet that there's a peak in the red channel all the way on the right. Try dropping your exposure by 1 stop and see what that does for you. Everything else might then be underexposed. If that's not desirable then you'll have to address that. Maybe multiple exposures and an HDR process.

I used to have a really hard time with red roses and and orange flowers. In my case it turned out to be exposure related, I was underexposing. I use a 70D.
