Yeah, I saw the too. If I had disposable funds for it, there would be no discussion. But I am funding this purchase through a sale of existing gear and I may not be able to get that much back for it. Josh

You won't know how many until you get it.You also won't know what was originally wrong with it (if anything) and whether the fix was minor or major. Also, in my experience with lenses, refurbs and used prices typically go hand in hand, so I think this could be a great deal. By the way, I've purchased maybe 2 dozen used lenses over the last few years and one refurb lens (135L). The only dud in the bunch that went back? The refurb. Randy...

I've probably purchased at least 20 lenses over the last 5 years or so. Most used. Some refurbed. The only one I ever sent back was a Canon refurbished EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I am not knocking Canon refurbs. Refurbs I've purchased (from Canon) besides the 50 1.8 II: 60 f/2.8, 17-40, 28 1.8, 28-135, 70-200 f/4L, and likely others. No issues with any of them. I've always been leery of refurb and prefer used. Refurb signals to me that something was wrong with it, so I try to stay away. I've had luck with buying used lenses. Josh

Jun 18, 2015 15:21 | #9 I personally prefer refurbed to used. They take it apart and go through it, and then put a warranty on it before it goes out. I doubt they have an incentive for it to come back.

A 5D iii for a similarly good price from the same seller (switching to Nikon apparently) went in less than 24 hours. Most likely not. I would guess that more often than not, refurbs are simply retail returns that can no longer be sold as new. Since Canon provides a warranty with them, I assume they must be inspected before being sold as refurbs. I've never had an issue with refurb. Even the one I sent back was a smooth-as-silk transaction. WARNING: I often dispense advice in fields I know little about!

You could be right. Canon does not seem to make a distinction between used, open box, repaired, etc., lumping all of those conditions under the category or refurbish, likely because that's what they do regardless why of they get a product back. I've typically only heard good things about refurb purchases from canon, for what it's worth, and it is nice to have canon backing the item for one year. Josh

Thanks for your reply. It sold within 24 hours. I expect similar prices moving forward, however, as there are rumors that a 6DII will be announced at some point. While I can't wait for that, in reality I can. Good to know I'm on the right track with my chosen camera though. Josh
