I think in terms of economies of scale it is possible to do so in a developed nation like Australia. For countries like ours not that feasible. Like I am able to buy an Apple 1m lenth lightning cable for AUD2.00 (inclusive 12% VAT). If you look online these cables cost significantly more.

everything has a cost. free is often more expensive. an apple cable for $1.55 USD sounds good to me. :-)
