Picked up the camera today and went straight to a men's suit shop - I have a call into a bridal store to go by and take a bunch of pictures - hopefully next day or so.

This is a shop in Toronto (Surmesur) that makes custom suits. I asked them if I could take a few pictures of suits that I thought might cause moire. These pictures were SOOC RAW to default LR jpg with no adjustments - I had just picked up the camera across the street so these are the very first pictures. I wasn't concentrating on exposure (sorry). Had the camera set to auto iso. I know there are at least 2, maybe 3, of the suits that would cause very serious moire if these they were seen on a tv - so, at least so far, it doesn't appear to be an serious issue - you may be able to see a small amount on one of the arms / shoulder but I think it is possibly reflection from the bright store lights.

Please download the files.

These are all handheld from 1/100 to 1/400 with the 100-400II - one of the shots (dark blue tux) is iso 3200 - in LR you can play with the sliders and bring up the shadows to see the details.

Lots more coming.

Possibly on arm / shoulder
- this suit was in the window and I think it is reflection but might be moire

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Another interesting find for me is you can use EC with Auto ISO (just like the 7D2). One would think they could update the 5D3 with a Firmware update this being the case.

Observations so far:
- this is not a fast camera - even with very fast SD / CF cards reviewing files in camera is materially slower than a 5D3
- latest Macbook Pro with fastest stuff inside can feel it for sure
- the mirror mechanism feels 7D2 like except with the added mass of being much larger
- with IS lenses like 70-200II, 100-400II, 35 F2, 100L, crazy shutter speeds are not needed - 1/FL is completely fine - without IS you are going to be at 1/3xFL to get the full detail if handholding
- love the fact that it has EC with Auto ISO
- this thing is basically a street legal race car as an analogy (porsche 911 gt3 like) - you can daily drive it for sure but there are compromises (file size, buffer size, technique)
- when you look back at a 20meg file size (5D3 / 7D2), the difference is enormous

- it almost felt good to put the 7D2 back in my hand and go out and let it rip

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. just went out into the sun going down 9pm night here in Toronto

grabbed the 50L and the 35 F2 IS

i could not with 1/160 on the L at 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and auto iso get remotely the picture I could get with the 35 F2 IS at 1/30 F2 wide open with Auto ISO - not even close

this camera loves IS

the camera was producing magical pictures with the 35 F2 - don't know what it was - like a Medium format butteriness but they have a beauty to them - F2, F4, F8 - colours were creamy

In the image 'suit 5' with the blue tie and orange tie clip, I see variation in the colour of the material, from green-tinged (above and left of the hadkerchief) and magenta-tinged (below the handkerchief). There are subtle variations elsewhere - is that the true colour of the material or false colour?

I see it too - 1, 4, and 7 have subtle green/ purple patches, unless there's colored lighting in the store.

I think it is there in #4.

I dont see it in #1

#7 is up high next to ceiling lights in the store so I think that is just reflective lighting

If a groom wore suit #4 to a wedding I was shooting, I would put my polarizer filter.

Look at the lapel above and to the left of the pocket square in #1: to my eyes, there's a clear purple cast there, and green above it. Same on the other side. Is that the lighting?

- for sure that is a purple cast
- the suits were positioned right under the store's lighting
- i'm not 100% saying that isn't moire, but that is not moire as i would view it
- i do know that if a groom showed up with a shinny grey suit that, i would be re-positioning him in every single picture, even with a 5D3, to make sure he wasn't going all reflective on me

- again, i'm not saying it isn't ever there, i'm saying that most / most /most of the time it isn't going to be an issue
- i also started a new thread about bridal grounds and it really doesn't appear to be an issue there

Are you seeing the moire in the small 1280px images hosted on the server here, or any other resized image? A couple of the small version suit images show a little moire on my desktop screen (96 ppi) and lots of colour moire on my Galaxy Note 3 phone (over 300 ppi), both being resized to fit though. When I checked the full size image on Flickr at 1:1 there was no moire.

As our output devices are also digital it is quite possible to generate moire effects when resizing images to fit on the screen.

Alan, I appreciate your comment on this topic. I am not a moire or screen resolution expert and what I see in the original pictures is no moire - but for sure I can see how resizing them on different screen sizes can indeed introduce the effect - thank you for your insight.

It's not just the resizing ratios, but the resizing methods as well. Nearest Neighbor, for example, easily creates an aliasing-fest with downsizing, even from an image that wasn't aliased to begin with. In fact, any image can become severely aliased with enough Nearest Neighbor downsizing, unless it is of something like blank sky or pure blur.
