- I can't describe it
- i don't know exactly what it is
- last night, I was comparing the 35 F2 to the 50L and the 35 F2 had it
- just shot a quick picture pointing the 100-400L out the window (a yin / yang - near / far) focus trial, and again like last night, where the 35 F2 had that medium format 'feel', the 100-400II produced the same thing
- it is a in focus / sharp and yet at the same time bokeh type rendering that is different than the 5D3

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Hrm,

So how do you think it feels like medium format?

The only thing is shares is a similar resolution. None of the rest (dynamic range being the biggest in my book). I'm curious though!

Very best,

When you look at the 2nd image, there is something happening that isn't 5D3 like.

In a similar way, I also experienced this with the 7D2 when comparing to the 5D3; with its pixel density, the way it transitions from in-focus to out of focus is different - because the pixel density is so fine it changes the way the bokeh happens. This is what I think is happening - it is a visual thing - it isn't medium format but it looks / feels different in my opinion.

Why would the bokah be any different? It's a function of the lens, not the camera. I can see the increase in resolution revealing more details but I would think that the out of focus areas would be just as out of focus.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

the OOF is still OOF, however, the in focus is bitingly sharp. I get the similar "feel" on occasion, shooting with the sony's 36mp fwiw. It's the ridiculous sharpness that gives it a bit more dimension I think.

you really get that feeling with stitches as well.

exactly what i was thinking.

contrast, it's what's for dinner. i'm obviously not talking about color, value, or tone contrast. the mind sees one thing sharp and it dulls the rest.
