hi all i recently got a a7,crazy happy with it,i got the book the complet guide to the a7 and a7r,
my question is i like to shoot in raw+jpeg,i choose this so i can have a good copy and a quick copy,i like some of the cheesy picture styles in the a7,they are only available in jpeg of course, but when i shoot in raw jpeg i still can't use them,i want to have a raw copy and a jpeg copy with the style i choose, surely i don't have to change from raw to jpeg then back and shoot twice to get this,am i doing something wrong?i like the style rich mono as a jpeg style and i also want the raw copy, surely this should be available

Hmmm,
I shoot raw + jpg with my A7II, as I did with A7R and never paid attention to what picture style was baked into the JPG.
I'll have to give it a test.

One thing that does work, is Lightroom assigning the Picture Style camera profile to the screen image on import.

To be honest, I rarely look at the JPGs. Just put them on the drive in a separate folder in case I want them for some purpose in the future.

Just did a quick test with A7II.
Camera set to Vivid for JPGs.
Shot a couple of test images in kitchen.
Imported them into Lightroom CC.
The JPG showed "embedded" for camera calibration.
The JPG was much more "vivid" in loupe mode than the raw with the Adobe default camera calibration. I changed it to Vivid and the two were much closer.

Also did the test using B&W as the camera style via the menu. The JPGs in Lightroom are B&W and the raw are color with Adobe default. That's to be expected.

Based on this quick test, I'd say that the camera style is applied to the JPG and the embedded style is recognized by Lightroom at import.

thanx for the reply, yes i can shoot vivid and bw and such but what i was wanting to do was have a raw file and the jpeg have the effect embedded, not picture style but the effects section like rich tone mono is my fave and HDR low and the other effects are all greyed out when using raw jpeg, not sure why that is,could i ask u to try that on your a7r,i have the a7 and mine won't do it,wonder of the a72 will or maybe a software update may help some day, thanx for the test and the reply

Does anyone know if you get the same look and quality if you shoot the art filter in camera vs adding it later in the Olympus App?
Yes, you can add the same art filters to a RAW image in Olympus Viewer.

But IMO it's faster to take RAW+JPEG with Art filters in camera. The RAW will be a normal shot, and the JPEG will have the Art filter applied.

A raw file by definition does not have any of the camera processing parameters applied.
The data may be embedded in the EXIF data so that software can apply the setting when importing the raw file.
That is what Adobe does with Camera Profiles in the Calibration window. They have created a routine that takes the data embedded in the EXIF data about camera style and then apply a profile that emulates the settings.

The advantage is that the bias of the camera style still has available the full range of the various adjustment sliders in the develop module.

The specific effects that you are asking about are applied by the camera during the in-camera JPG processing. That means the camera has to be set to a JPG file format to make them available.

My Fuji XT-1s also have some JPG only parameters. I think most camera manufacturers do.

thanx for the reply, yes i realize the effects are for jpeg files, but when shooting raw+jepeg one should be able to access all the effects related to jpeg while in that mode,it seems this isn't the case.also why would sony limit the shooting mode when effects are used,as mentioned i like to use rich tone mono but i can't use the timer with that mode,to get a good steady shot on a tripod i have to use a remote or set up my phone to take the shot, shouldn't the timer feature be available on any effect or raw+jpeg.very frustrating,as mentioned just picked up a em5 olympus, excited to see if it can do any of theses problems

It would be nice.
My suspicion is that the engineers decided that if someone wants to use the in-camera effects they don't want a raw file that has none of the effects. EXIF data does not have the capability to store the effects parameters in a format that can be read by raw processing software such as Lightroom or Capture One.

There may also be some processor resource considerations.
