David Arbogast how would you summarize the difference between the 5DS/R and the a7RII

David Arbogast how would you summarize the difference between the 5DS/R and the a7RII

I think they are both incredible cameras. Some obvious a7R II differences are:

1. IBIS - I can shoot my Zeiss 135mm and other non-IS lenses handheld at lower shutter speeds - extremely cool,
2. better high-ISO performance,
3. better DR,
4. probably more color-accurate (DXO gave it a very high metamerism score).

But the 5DS R has some awesome powers of its own:

1. I know it's only an 8MP difference between the two, but something about these 50.6 MP files that is just breathtaking. I am a detail freak and I get tons of it.
2. Far more accurate electronic level - I can trust it, but the Sony level is loosey-goosey inaccurate.
3. When shooting AEB brackets in continuous mode (where the camera takes all the exposures after a single shutter press) the Sony produces only 12 bit files for some reason - and there are a few other settings that will force a lower 12-bit file such as LE NR and others. The 5DS R consistently delivers 14-bit raw files all the time.
4. Another a7R II oddity is that Sony uses a lossy compressed raw file by default, but you can elect to use uncompressed raw. Canon, however, uses a lossless compressed raw file. This produces the odd effect that my a7R II files can take up more file space than the 5DS R files! A typical a7R II uncompressed raw is always about 84MB, while my 5DS R files range from 45-85MB, but average about 60 MB.
5. Built in bulb timer is handy.
6. I trust my 5DS R more with my TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II because of adapter issues (mainly internal reflections).
7. I did an extensive test of all my standard (non-TS-E) lenses on both cameras and was pleased to see exactly the same performance on both cameras. However, I also noticed that I just like the way the 5DS R files rendered better in LR. It could be that LR just isn't the best for Sony files - many swear that Capture One is best suited. Sucks for me because I have tried and tried and tried and tried to be a Capture One convert, but I just hate that workflow - or rather too much love my LR / PS workflow.

I have said before that if I could only have one, I'd go with the a7R II, but the more I use both the less certain I am of that. I'm just nuts about both I guess. Be happy and get both. :p

I'm trying to upgrade from my canon 5dii. Thanks everyone for their nice shots. I love the 5dsr photos. Wow on the the detail. I like the Sony a7rii. But Sony lenses are not cheap.

There are many online reviews that shows that 2 is not true

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Oops I meant to say better high ISO range. Performance-wise the 5DS R is actually very impressive through its native range.

There is, though, one unique way the a7R II out-performs 5DS R at common higher ISO. Previous Sony sensors (e.g. in the D800 or a7 R) had more significantly DR than Canon sensors at 100, but there was always precipitous fall-off at higher ISOs (around 800 and up). The backside illuminated sensor in the a7R II appears to maintain its DR edge throughout the ISO range. So, say, at ISO 3200 the D800 had no better DR than a 5D III, but the a7R II appears to maintain it's DR advantage even at higher common ISO levels.

One final note: it would be more nice to, instead of merely stating there are "many online reviews..." to provide a reference link to at least one. Not for proof - because I do believe you - but for mere helpfulness.

sorry about that I have come across two youtube videos that showed this but i have no idea how to re-find them

i completely agree about the DR at high ISO - just did a few test shots at 12,800 on both camera at basically 3 stops under and then raised in post with + shadows as well and the Sony holds together way better in the blacks - they are still black - whereas the Canon's blacks go red (similar but different when they go green if you shoot MRaw or SRaw) - the Noise is ok it is just the colour of fidelity of the darks is terrible when doing this in the Canon.

i will try and find the videos

the hole shoot 3 stops under and raise in post still favours the Sony

here is the pictures I was playing with

12,800 ISO both A7Rii and 5DSR (1/500, F4, 12,800, 85L)
- shot 3 stops under
- raise 3 stops in post
- +50 on Shadows in LR

If you shoot using the above methodology (I don't), the Sony appears significantly better - contrary to what I previously heard - but I think this is more of a DR test at high ISO

Interesting test. Thanks for posting it. The a7R II is holding good color and detail.

I never use the expanded high ISO on any camera - so for me ISO 6400 is my cap on the 5DS R. However, I do regularly shoot ISO 50 on my 5DS R (and a7R II) when bracketing.

did you have bot cameras mounted on the same tripod at the same time or are you just super quick at lens/camera changing?

It was very fast. 5DSR has a RRS L bracket. The A&Rii and a tripod foot that would fit into the RRS tripod - 15 seconds to do

This camera shake issue is really starting to get to me. I was in the jet yesterday with my 70-200 on and maybe 5% of the pictures I took at 1/500 didn't have some degree of blur. Is there a rule-of-thumb to reduce it? I really thought at least doubling my max focal length would do it, but I guess it just wasn't enough with how much the jet vibrates.
