Decided to take a handheld picture in a dark corner of the house.
- 7D2 vs 5DSR with the 70-200 IS II
- 7D2 at 100mm and 5DSR at 160mm (all approx to get similar framing - see exif data on flikr)
- did slight cropping to get more exact framing
- made a mistake and shot the 5DSR at 1/60 vs 1/100 with the 7D2 so adjusted exposure in LR to make equal
- because framing is adjusted, the 5DSR is putting lots more pixels on the subject
- without NR, both images are significantly poorer

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Looks like the 7D Mark II has slightly less noise but the 5DsR has a lot more detail. Noise levels are close enough for me to consider a 5DsR now.

What's the goal of this comparison under these settings?

I don't see much in it with noise but the 5DS R shows lots more detail .
thanks for showing this .

The general thought was the 5Dsr wouldn't be very good at higher iso's, as Canon specifically limited the camera.

I think this is showing the camera can be used easily at higher iso's, at least for non-commercial work - and the sensor technology in the 7D2 on the crop sensor works just as good on the full frame sensor.

In some ways, this makes me really interested in the 5DIV - you would guess the high iso improvement is going to continue - otherwise why even wait to bring out the camera? I don't need/want that many pixels, but I'm really impressed with the 5Dsr - much better than I expected based on the specs. YMMV.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

The 7D is significantly more noisy. But I hate to say it, I think your method is flawed, the exposure adjustment of 2/3 stop really makes it an unfair comparison.

Using a different focal length is not necessary either, just put the 5DSR into crop mode, leave the tripod in the same place and use the lens at the same focal length. You don't necessarily need to use a zoom.

I had a few goals / questions that I wanted answered:

- don't know until you do it so I wanted to do it and see what it looked like

- when you get the 5DSR 6400 is the high ISO with 12,800 turned off, labeled as H, and yet not so with the 7d2 that actually goes up to 16,000 with H labeled as 25,600
- this test proved to me that this is complete BS and in fact you could more than easily the opposite should be true if you take pixel density on subject into consideration - especially with modern NR software

- even though the sensors has very similar pixel density they are different sensors so I wanted to see if there actually was a difference - they appear basically similar

- modern NR software really is amazing and you can get usable images (absolutely not commercial quality) but software can take a pretty ugly 12,800 ISO image and make it useable - and if you have 50 megapixels like on the 5DSR, and you have enough practice with NR / sharpening / masking / etc, you can use this increased pixel information to your advantage and get a way better end result image than you would expect or deserve
