The Ziess 135 is something else... http://www.lensrentals.com (external link) if you want to give it a try. The rental fee isn't all that bad. Not to mention, Zeiss is running a sale on it's glass at the moment :) It might be a good time to jump in?

You are officially a BAD influence! LOL

I'm still very happy with the 135L and I think my wife would kill me if I swapped it out for a non-AF lens.

Like you, I would love to rent the 200 f2. Scared I wouldn't sent it back, though!

Nice review with excellent images.

I do have a question: is the sense of "awe" you are experiencing simply coming from the sheer resolution, or do you perceive a better image quality than the 5D III? Color better? Dynamic range better? Just curious.

Thanks again for the nice review! :)

It's only money Mickey... LOL go ahead... and buy one... you will love it. :) The MF lens... I was a little concerned it would be more difficult than it is to shoot, it is not IMO. Would it be nice to have AF... yes. That being said... depends on your shooting style. I'm not photographing moving targets with it. I am truly impressed with the lens and can't wait to buy another Zeiss lens. Like you... the wife is going to give me a beating if I do not slow down ROFL.

The 200 F/2 has been on my radar since it was introduced. I will own one... when... who knows LOL

If nothing else.. rent the Zeiss and see if you enjoy shooting with it.

Thank you David, glad you like the review.

To answer your questions.... YES! LOL

It isn't in my head. The camera trumps the 5D3 in a number of ways. It also falls short compared to the 5D3 in a few areas. Video..which I have never used, is where the 5D3 excels. Higher ISO settings/capabilities... goes to the 5D3.

It's early on... and I still need time with the 5Ds but I can tell you this... the image quality is significantly better. The details are amazing in the images I'm capturing. The fines details. This may sound nutty but with the 5Ds my lenses are being put to the test and it feels like I have a new lens line. It is like they were being held back and now the 5Ds can allow the glass to fully resolve what you are trying to capture. On the 5D3, I believe it wasn't able to do that. I'm not saying I didn't capture ...what I thought.. were great shots on the 5D3....I'm saying that I'm seeing details I didn't see before now with the 5Ds. Each lens is like shooting with a macro lens. Just tons of detail in the images. Good an bad! For portraits... the need for a makeup artist is very real. LOL The camera captures all the fine details... good and bad.

DR.... the jury is out for me.. as I haven't really put it to the test... it appears to be on par with the 5D3 ... maybe a little better but again, I haven't really been in a situation where I need to push the files.

ISO --- I shot ISO 800-1000 yesterday capturing butterflies and the noise isn't bad at all. It is there but can be reduced in LR or with a plugin. I haven't gone beyond ISO 1000 as I just haven't needed to do that. Plus... I've never really ever shot past ISO 1600 over the years. Just my shooting style and preference I suppose.

If nothing else... rent the 5Ds or "R" and have fun with it. I think Lensrentals.com will put the cost of the rental towards the purchase of the body if you really want to buy it after renting it.

I wasn't expecting to be blown away from the camera. I had seen the horrible sample shots all over the net (not sounding like a jerk here and that I think I'm amazing or anything) but, the shots floating around with the exception of a few had me nervous about buying the camera. I didn't want a 5D3 with bigger files. It isn't the 5D3... it's a great new camera with the ability to produces better... more detailed images.

I'm still working my way through the features and learning the camera. So far.. so good. If I stumble on anything good or bad... I'll continue to post it here.

Hope this helps?

Here is a 100% crop from yesterday... ISO 800... no noise reduction. I just sharpened the image in LR @ 55. The full res file is posted as well. I missed catching the shot at a right angle to the butterfly... so.. the top of the wing is out of the focal plane. But... I think it's a good example how clean ISO 800 is or can be. With a little noise reduction if you wanted... it would disappear. I think if I were to print it like it is... you wouldn't even notice the noise in the image.

100% crop.

I think this butterfly has a zit on it's cheek. JK!

I thought for sure I'd *never* want this camera. Now I'm so hopeful on what might be to come from the IV.

I'd like for canon to use something similar for the sensor, but have a firmware switch so it can dual iso for incredible low light and dr at a the cost of a lower mp count, but I see that as the best of both worlds... and still make it an all around camera.

I'm in awe of what you guys are having fun with though.. if I won the lottery.. or sold a kidney... :)

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

It will be interesting to see what Canon comes out with to replace the 5D3. A slight increase in megapixels and burst rate would be a nice addition. Having a built in intervalometer would be great as well.

Thanks for the review Hatch1921. Are you editing RAW files? Does Lightroom 6 converts 5DS Raw?

Hi there. :)

I'm using LR/PS CC for all the edits. Adobe just pushed out a RAW upgrade last week to handle the new cameras/files. You would have to jump on over to Adobe to find out if LR6/ RAW has been upgraded :) http://www.adobe.com …p-lightroom/versions.html (external link)

I'm not one to tell people how to spend their money. :) I will say I wasn't all that thrilled of paying a subscription for LR/PS ... as I had purchased an Adobe suite several months before they made the move to CC. That being said... for $9.99 a month... constant updates and improvements... I'm a satisfied customer. It sort of stinks to shell out $120 a year... but... then again... when PS was $600 a pop.... and LR was around $150, you get a lot for your $120 a year. Maybe...consider the subscription if possible? Adobe does a very good job keeping the programs up to date and fresh. Just a thought. :)

Very informative. Thanks Hatch!!!:-)

Please keep posting these images. They are really amazing and you definitely know how to get the best out of this camera. I still remember your 135L review several years ago.

Cheers!
