I've pretty much decided I'm going to change web hosting companies, the one I'm with has had problems from time to time and I've had it with them. I only have a personal website which is used for sharing photos etc. with friends and family, and of course I need reliable email.

Recommendations?

I switched to bluehost.com about a year ago and have been happy with them.

I've done a review of web hosting providers for photographers (external link). I didn't like BlueHost.

I can't help you on the web side but for email, I recommend Google. For $5/mo per mailbox, you get you domain name email handled by Gmail. Its fast, reliable, and no one in their right mind blacklists them.

Agree that web hosts are rubbish at email. I put customers onto gmail, but I personally use fastmail.com. It's very reliable, technically excellent, good support, and cheaper than gmail. Gmail is probably a better bet for many.

If you do host your email somewhere other than your web host make sure you set your SPF records, and DKIM if you can work it out.

I just switched to SiteGround and have been very impressed with their service. They are based in Europe but they seem to always have people available to help. They helped me set up my two sites and add email. I pay $14.95 a month for unlimited websites, unlimited email with 1gb of storage for each address. Hasn't been long, but so far I have no complaints.

Pretty much every web host is an unreliable email host. They do email as an afterthought, servers end up on spam lists, SPF and DKIM aren't set up, spam filters are poor, resulting in your emails not always being delivered where they should and spam in your inbox. Fastmail, Gmail, Office 365, or any quality dedicated email service is a better bet.

ISP email and DNS servers can be pretty bad too. Like you said, its often an afterthought, done because customers expect them to have it, but they they don't put much resources into them.

I've been a pair.com user for 16 years, they've been great. Never had any issues. I upgraded my account after the first few years and later downgraded, all very easy.

Yep ISP email is pretty poor, I haven't used it for a decade or more.

I've used ixwebhosting for several years... never had any downtime or issues, and their pricing is competitive.
