I already have the 580ex, should i get a 420ex to trigger the 580 or the ST-E2 transmitter ?

You could get a 420EX and use it as your main light, with the 580EX on the camera as master and fill. Alternately if you want more power get a 550EX to use off-camera as your main - it's just as powerful as the 580EX, just not quite as quick to recharge, but the CP-E3 battery pack fixes that.
