in my mind at that price, it'll have to be pretty good to compete..

Almost half price of the Canon so I reckon compete is in the bag already.
I like the AF-MF switch via focus ring, Sigma Pentax mount lenses often had that.

3 SLD elements, wonder which one are the SLD elements. It weighs in a a whopping 1kg+, a good 200g heavier than canon/tamron versions.

No IS. 300g heavier than my 28 1.8 & 85 1.8 combined. 1-1/3 stops slower. Yawn. It will have to be phenomenal to outsell the Tamron VC, and/or 24-70 f/4L. Looks like another Sigma 24-105 to me.

well, maybe. it proclaims to be built for 50mp camera, so if it is optically better than the tamron, then it'll be close to the canon 24-70ii, and the optics alone may make it worthwhile. On paper at least, it has the same high quality glass that the 24-70ii uses, however due to their 70-200 flop, I have little faith in tokina.

I had some nice Tokina (Vivitar) glass in the '70s. Haven't had one since I've been shooting digital. Really big, really expensive, really heavy lenses don't work for me. Especially when there are alternatives that work better - for me. My 28 1.8, 50 1.4, and 85 1.8 didn't cost that much combined.

Just reading along now.

If they sold ten copies they'd outsell the 24-70f4...

I bought a Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 when I got my first dSLR. It worked OK, but the main attraction was that thing was built like a tank. I hated the MF/AF clutch + switch arrangement, which made it hard to change modes quickly or without disturbing initial focus.

However, when I got my 5D3 I needed a FF lens in that range for a quick test shot. It would confirm focus in one shot mode, but the image was clearly OOF. MFA only minimized the problem; the image in live view was not sharp - the lens was not able to focus properly. So somewhere/somehow that indestructible looking lens got out of alignment and since it's long out of production, I don't want to bother trying to find someone who will attempt a repair.

I'm sure this is not an endemic problem with Tokina optics, but then again I haven't seen anything from them lately which I felt was worth investigating. My Canon 24-70 mk I is serving me well, thank you very much.

That tokina is a really old lens though, right? I have one, I think it was a step down from their better 28-70mm...but it is pretty soft, so it sits on the shelf mostly
