Broken/Dropped Lens...what should I do?

My 50L dropped from a chair today and broke. I've attached photos of the damage.

First time for me, and I'm not sure what I should do.

It's the front part of the lens that broke off, where the filter and hood attaches, with some extra plastic. The focus ring is a bit loose.

I was able to put it slide it back in and tape it, and it auto focuses and seems to be sharp.

Should I send it in for repairs? If so, where? (I bought it from KEH). How much does that cost?

Thanks. I'm currently volunteering at a camp as one of the photographers. I don't need the 50 for this job, but it is my desert island lens, and I have another gig in mid July that I planned to use this lens extensively.

Thanks so much!

Thankfully I've never dropped an L lens but I have a 50mm 1.4, it looked undamaged but the AF would not work. It's surprising how much punishment these lenses can take. I decided to sell it as is on e-bay clearly explaining the problem and started the auction at 0.99. It surprised me how many people bid on it. I eventually got near on £100 when excellent working used ones were going for £200. I estimated my accident cost me £100 as that is how much I could of replaced it for. It's surprising that there are lots of people out there that have the ability and knowledge/skill on how to do a repair.

Although you say it works and auto focuses Canon no doubt will charge you a lot of money, Personally if it was me I would sell it and replace it with another used one and take the loss.

i'd send it to canon...you can fill out the form here, and send it in:

also, looking at this older thread, it looks like the same issue, and cost the person $299 to fix

Like you say, if you are planning on using it extensively then I wouldn't hesitate to send it in for repair. At least you can get a quote for work needed and not have to worry about it failing.

Call Canon. They should be the best place to get the repair done. They can give you an estimate once they have your damaged lens and can tell you how long it will take to repair. Nobody on the forum can answer those questions appropriately.

After you get your lens repaired, if you don't have insurance on your gear then I'd get that. I have a rider on my homeowner's.

Unfortunately my bag got pulled over once. The 100L & 135L got banged around a bit. They didn't focus correctly after testing them. In this instance insurance decided it was easier (cheaper?) to replaced them rather than repair them.

It is good piece of mind having the insurance. Personally I hope to never have to use it again.

You need to meet qualification requirements in order to become a CPS member, you cannot merely apply and get in. The qualifications and the benefits are listed...

I do have insurance...but forgot to update it to include this lens since it was a relatively new purchase....heart sank when I realized it....

I meet the requirements listed, but I wasn't familiar with CPS until researching repairs. Would it be beneficial to join now, especially to help with turn around time for the repair?

How recent a purchase? My insurance agent says I have about 30 days of leeway to add an item.

Wow, it would be great if you could insure items after a loss. :-)

I am guessing that is as long as the item is still in good condition within that 30 days......

Just got the estimate back from Canon...$755 total...I knew it'd be expensive...but not that expesnive.

I'm thinking now that I may be better off just selling the busted one and buying a new used one.

Would I be able to get $400 out of the busted one?

Of I may just use it taped together...
